What to model & what to leave out?

I recently moved, and in so doing I now have a 16 x 8 foot roofed and sided shed for a train room.  I am both excited and daunted with all the space I now have for trains.

My plan now is to model the Vermont Rail System point to point from Bellows Falls Vermont to Rutland.  I was thinking of doing a 2 foot shelf layout in a horseshoe,.

Nick Muff's KCS

ARRRGH! I can't believe it. I just spent a very enjoyable 30 minutes visiting Nick Muff's fantastic KCS. When I came to the MRH website to give it an "awesome" rating I accidentally rated it "Poor". I think I need a Do Over button. What a great railroad. Thanks Charlie for the interview and for including it in this month's issue. Great Job!

Mt. Coffin & Columbia River - 23"x41" n-scale layout

Been working (slowly) on a 23"x41" n-scale layout based on the cannery industry along the Columbia River (Oregon) in the early 1900s.

Thought I'd share some construction picts since its start at the beginning of the year.

Shift from steam to diesel?

I am curious: being in the beginning of a return to the hobby after so many years away I am noticing some significant differences in the themes and equipment for most of the layouts I see here and in other sites.  20 years ago, steam was king.  Logging and narrow gage were big. Western settings predominated. Model-building and kitbashing were proud occupations and talents.

Today, from what I can see, contemporary era East Coast and Mid-West diesel operations are the norm. Equipment is ready-to-run from the box.

Switching Layout

It seems the question of "Need a good switching layout plan" seems to arise from time to time. There is a cool article about the Effingham RR in Trains mag that looks like would make a great switching layout.

Help with Layout Design - Ideas?

I can't quite decide on my layout - I need some help

I'm currently using a fold up ping pong table to run some trains on - I'd like to stick with this due to space requirements

I've got a lot of equipment to run (Athearn Challenger, Bachmann Centennial, few other smaller locos) as well as lots of passenger coaches and lots of freight cars

I've already got a NCE Powercab and a heap of flex track, as well as alot of Hornby track (of a suitable radius for my Challenger and DD40AX)

X2011: The world according to Lego

I was asked to go take some photos of the Lego layouts here at the 2011 National Train Show. As I normally do, I went overboard....
