Layout design
Have lots of HO & Lionel parts - how to get from what I have to a 'nice' layout
I have a new house with a large basement, approx 20' x 25' available for trains.
Want (eventual dream layout)
- an On30 proto-freelance railroad that interchanges with an O gauge Delaware & Hudson railroad, circa 1900
- a way to slowly design and build the above layout
Currently Have
- A large amount of HO gauge, code 100, Athearn snap-track, and probably 50 miscellaneous HO gauge rolling stock (almost all Athearn blue-box, with plastic couplers).
RIP Carl Arendt
I regret to have to inform you all of the death of Carl Arendt, well-known modeller and advocate for small and Micro layouts. His popular website, Micro/Small Layouts for Model Railroads, contained articles, photos, and plans for layouts in small spaces.
Where to place delayed magnets
I am going to have to use magnets to uncouple on some areas of my layout where I cannot reach. Is there any rule of thumb concerning where to place the magnet?
I know from experience that unexpected uncoupling can be a problem and I would like to avoid that if possible.
Recap
Ok, an overview is in order. I like the new design as it serves "an end point" for a single track railroad which is 30 inches wide and covers an "S" curved railroad extending to 20 feet to the other end (a port and small yard area). A diesel switch engine serves each end and 2-8-0's with a max of 6 cars or so run from end to end. There are no interchange tracks and the railroad doesn't serve as a feeder to any other road. It's just for me. . .
river making
Ive recently gotten back into the hobby after being away from it for about 25 years. Im currently thinking of putting in a running river, but am stuck on how to go about doing this. Anyone have any ideas?
Yard Design 2
Hopefully this is a better design, given that your comments made a lot of sense. There are a few comments and concerns:
Drawing conventions and notations for panel design -- how to start
My layout is reaching the point where I am starting to think of how I want to operate it. Have been playing a bit with JMRI and looked at TrainController. But I am finding it a bit difficult to convert my track 'plan' into the symbolic arcs of the style I see in example control panels. Can anyone suggest sources of inspiration and documentation conventions that could help me on the way?
Track Plan Review
Greetings on a snowy Saturday! (In Wisconsin)
I've just made some modifications to the track plan of my Lake Country Railroad and would like your opinions. I think I have annotaded the picture well, but please post any questions and I will get back to you as soon as I can.
Thanks for looking.
