What's your "Golden" memory of railroading?

We all have something inside us that fuels the passion. A childhood memory of railfanning or growing up and playing by the rails. Something!!! Without exception, everybody was once a newbie with no experience; nothing but some inspirational memory.

Make Mine a Double

I am calling it done, ready for submission to the GPB on Feb 7. May I present to you the LK&O track plan final.

A bit of explanation is in order for what is not denoted on the XTrack drawing...

33.5" radius HO Helix?

If my math is right a 33.5" radius helix with 4" separation is just shy of a 2% grade. I have found several formula for effective grade each yielding slightly different results but all seem to work out to be somewhere around 2.5%.

From your experience would a 33.5" radius helix be reasonably trouble free with 6 axle diesel, 50' rolling stock, 16 car train length, and track work that is up to par?

N-scale Model Railroading vs N-trak modular clubs

Good Morning, fellow modelers:

I'm always interested what model railroaders think about this or that.  Jeff Schultz and friends popped up
while on a search for another subject in Google, and it centered around the disconnects that are inherent
with a typical N-trak layout.  each module is a work unto itself, and most often looks like it.

Return to the Basin

It's been a while since we had anything worth saying about the Sudbury Division, but we can report we are still chugging away, though not with steam locos.  You may recall we were having issues with electrical pickup in our last installment (Tales from the Basin Part 2), and we had to work long and hard to get that under control.  Last summer we took every car off the layout and cleaned each of their wheels individually with cotton swabs and alcohol, cleaned all the locomotives and all the track from top to bottom.

Modular Railroad Design

Hello All,

Here is the problem our Club is facing on building a new HO Scale Layout.

The layout is approx 25 ft in length and 15 feet deep shaped as a large D. The layout is modular with the large straight section being modules 4 feet deep, and the rest of the layout having 30-36 inch modules in width. The modules vary from 4-6 feet in length. It will have a double track mainline running through the modules around the layout.

The members want a modular/permanent layout. Any thoughts out there on pro's & con's.

Byron-worthy?

I am on Byron's schedule now so I have a deadline to make. T minus 30 days and counting. May I ask you take a look at the Firestone plant arrangement? A major rubber factory complex for switching activity is a druther. The green buildings are not exacts, just to get a feel.

Please shoot holes in my plan because otherwise it looks like to me I have the LK&O's namesake locales in place - Lapeer, Kitzmiller, and Ohio.

Backdrops, Facias & Skirting

While this project was completed some time ago, I wanted to revist it, to show the dramatic difference a simple backdrop, facsia and some skirting can make.

Originally, the layout had none of these things:

Rather visually unappealing.  Just a backdrop does make some improvement:

Even just a facsia can help:

Flooring

So I have decided to add a floor to part of my layout that is giving me (well actually others that are vertically challenged) some issues during operating sessions. My questions is quite simple and maybe some of you out there that have the "mushrooms' growing in the basement could chime in. I want to know what is the best way to build a floor on existing concrete. I only need 10" in elevation to make everyone happy but I have to run the flooring around the end of one peninsula for a total run of approx 35'

Thank you

Neil

Car float

Hi,

My son and I are planning on building an N scale layout that would have a car float based on the Santa Fe.

Also are there any 3 way turnouts in N scale that are available, we live in the UK.

Many thanks,

railbender.
