N scale diorama INTO G scale boxcar!

Came across this diorama set INTO a G scale boxcar at:

While the page is in Dutch, pics talk by themselves.

Need inspiration!

I want to model an aggregates quarry but I need some information about railroad operations in a quarry and some ideas for a possible track plan. I am modeling modern era, H0 scale and my space is 2x9.

My idea is modeling the crusher/loader zone, I have the Walter's Glaciar gravel kit and some ballast hoppers.

Helix Help needed

I am seeking help with a bit of a construction issue.  I am building a 2 level layout, and with out scrapping the top and lowering the main level to add a 3rd level to get me to the top, and an issue with the no-lix that i wanted to do with a 2.5% grade, and run that along one 14ft wall and have it hit the second level around the other top, which now I don't think will work, with out up-ing the grade, it seems I am left to choice to go a helix route at this time.

Seeking input on yard design with intermodal

This is my first layout (HO). At this time I don't have much interest in operations but I want to plan for it in case my interests change as I learn more about the hobby. My yard will include an intermodal section which is where I have to make a choice; a shorter double-ended section with access from the main yard (Example 1 in the attached PDF), a longer single-ended section (Example 2) or a medium-length double-ended but with no access to the main yard (Example 3). The parallel tracks in the main yard are about 8'. The intermodal section in Example 1 is about 4' long.

How long

How long do people spend working out their track plans .. I originally had an idea of what I wanted to do about 4 months ago .. but so far all the ideas I've put down on paper have to be changed when I've looked at how it might fit in the space I've got. I've looked at plans online and in magazines trying to get some ideas but when I put them down on paper either they don't fit or they just don't look right.

Virginian and Lake Erie's picture

Back ground info on prototype area.

I am looking for some maps that show trackage in Wheeling, Wv. Railroads involved were the Wheeling and Lake Erie, Pennsylvania, and the Baltimore and Ohio. If anyone has something they can post here either map or a link I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Are S-turns inevitable in yards?

I am in the process of designing my first yard. Seems like every yard I've seen so far has at least one part with end-to-end turnouts, forming an S-turn. I see it mostly in the first rung of a ladder and in sidings. Is this OK in these circumstances? If I insert the suggested 12" of straight section between left & right turns then the parallel tracks are too far apart. I'm using #5 turnouts. Thanks for any advice.

Richfield Rail Runners back "ON TRACK"

February 17th, 2011 we will be moving into our new location in Bloomington, Mn.

The new headquarters will have a crew lounge for watching DVD's & videos, workshop area for individuals to work on their projects, car and locomotive maintainence bench, and 25x17 layout room with air conditioning and heat :))  lighting in the ceiling and the walls have already been painted. The floor has been painted a medium gray too.

Returning after many years away.

 Hello all!

Well, I am returning to the hobby after many years away! I am excited about all of the advancements, but a few things I find really shocking:

1.  The quality of the locomotives and rolling stock has just sky-rocketed!

2. The price has sky rocketed as well...

My plans are to build a small shelf-switching layout.  I have not decided on theme, location, or anything at this point.  I have previously built an HO 4X8 layout (never finished) and an N scale layout on a door (semi-finished).
