Getting More Functional?
You were kind enough to point out my previous attempts at track planning resulted in disaster. For this I thank you. I have been trying to get continuous loop out of my head and instead focus on 1 trip through the layout. All the while maintaining the 3 locales and their proto track arrangement.
Am I getting closer to something workable in this attachment?
Thank you for your time and Merry Christmas to all.
MRH gets quoted...
Well it had to happen eventually. MRH is quoted in Tony Koester's new book Model Railroading from Prototype to Layout. If you haven' seen it, look at page 80. The quote is from Issue 4 and refers to Marty McGuirks column where he talks about a place one can find Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps. Kudos to Marty and the magazine.
So now for the $64 dollar question, does Tony Koester read MRH? or di he get this information from Marty?

Yard tower
I am in the process of building a 1950's era Eastern railroad. I would like to add a yard tower in the location shown. How would the turnouts be controlled for access to the yard? Would they be interlocked or hand thrown?
Thanks
Design Software
Greetings all,
A While back (I think it was here) someone posted a link to some software that did just about every type of calculation that you would need in design/building a layout all I can remember was stanstrains.com or something along those lines it was like 10-12 bucks to downoad. If anyone remembers or knows the site I'm looking for would you be so kind as to post it again I would be most grateful
Happy Railroading,
Sean
Staging Color??
I'm about to start building the staging area that will be 10" under the main deck. I am planning to use drywall on 1/2" plywood. What color would you paint the drywall? I am thinking a darker color to not draw attention to the staging area, but don't think that black is the right color.
Any insight is appreciated!

Sponge-worthy
This is a follow-up to the suggestions of using a wet sponge to smooth drywall joint compound. I sanded the initial application with 150g paper on a 10" bodyman handboard. I vacuumed and repeated this process until all joints were flat and straight without major defects. I then applied the final coat of joint compound 4-6" beyond the prior applications with a 9" knife pressed tightly. Immediately afterward I wiped the joint lightly with a wet sponge (not dripping wet but definitely more than damp).
Hudson and Hartford and other stuff
I guess you guys are tired of hearing from me since no one bothers to respond or comment on any of the things I've written lately, but I do need to apout or sound off occassionally so here goes.
Lake Country Railroad - Staging
The staging area on my layout will be the lowest of three decks at 30". The next deck above it will be 40". There will be eight tracks to "stage" trains. Six of the tracks will be split into two segments to allow for piggybacking two short trains or one long train. There will also be a reversing loop to allow for "turning" a train at its destination.
