Layout design

TT scale Otter Creek Falls Coal & Lumber Rwy.

I’ve been contemplating the building of a TT scale layout for quite some time now. The original plan was to build the first section and see if I could get it published in one of the major railroad publications. I have instead decided to do an SBS (step by step) and post it to two other forums besides Model Railroad Hobbyist, TTnut and Rail Line Forum.

Some people have asked what the track arrangement is for my switching layout. Below is a sketch:

New to the forum - here's my track plan

Hi guys-

I am new here and wanted to share some things. I've been away from MRRing for more than 35 years, and more and more over the last few months, I've been getting the itch to re-enter the hobby. WOW! Lots of new stuff to learn, but more importantly, there are more resources (thank you, Internet...).

Elsmere Jct

While I haven't been posting, progress has been made on the W&N.  the latest focus has been on the Elsmere Jct. portion of the railroad.

Below is a schematic diagram of the initial phase of the layout construction.  Elsmere Jct is in the SW corner of the room, just outside Wilmington.

Building A Piece Of History Now: Thurmond West Virginia-Backdrops 10/29

I am working on a design for a small scene for demonstrating scenery and track work for out model railroad. It will be small (roughly 1ft. x 1ft. with the front curving) I am looking for design ideas and what an interesting scene would be. Any ideas from those on here?

Thanks for all of your suggestions everyone. Thurmand seemed like a good location and the below area is what we will model. It will include a cantilever signal seen on the right and the three buildings as low relief background structures.

Control Panel Variations - Opinions?

I have two ideas for my "Tower" control panels.  The first has just the tower name:

The second has both the tower name and milepost.  I pretty sure I prefer this one:

What do you all think?

Layout Update: Mid October 2015

Over the last couple of weeks, I have been working on finishing the installation of the two remaining sidings (Paradigm siding & Morris Stock Feed Yard) and placing/annotating the track feeders for the Paradigm section. The bus wire for this power district (Main Level PD #2) was made, marked with two yellow strips of tape every 5 feet (give or take), and run through the pre-drilled holes along the back wall from the east helix to the power cabinet under the window.

First level critique from what I've learned

All,

Attached is a first level drawing. I have circled the radii of each turn. I opted for outside turns for 42 inch and inside 36. 42's would look better for long cars as seen on the outside and 36 on the inside would not look bad on from the inside. I also showed narrower/narrowest parts of isles dimension for those that have done it before to give advice if I need to widen these.

Steps are open on wall side to get tracks behind steps to avoid duck-unders

Supersize it?

Jim Six's recent thread has left me wondering how much railroad is enough. I'm looking for a new train room, er-- house, and of course I have dreams of grandeur. But Jim's experience (I am heading for the same thing), Michael Rose's recent rethinking the HO section of his empire, and many similar comments has me wondering what is realistic.

Ben's Big Book Of Recommended Practice

As I wrap up the removal of what is the fourth layout I have taken down and the first layout larger than a standard room, I have encountered a variety of model railroad building practices.  Using the experiences I have gained while dismantling these projects, I shall document here a set of best practice which in my eyes provides the most economical long term advantages.  While I feel these suggestions are universal, there will be some places and some people for whom they are not ideal.  This being said, it'd be well worth taking these tips into consideration on that
