8x8 L shaped layout. Shelf or tabletop?

Just recently purchased my home and I have access to the basement storage area. It needs to be drywalled and somewhat finished. But I'm looking at adding a layout in the room. I have an area that is 8' x 8' in the corner of the room. I do like the idea of a shelf layout, but could also do a table top layout as well.

Are there any plans out there for such a layout? Height for the shelf layout? I was thinking 42" height and 30" wide. that will give me plenty of room to add my track as well as buldings for the backdrop.

Suggestions please.

Using sectional/modular methods on a home layout (TOMA)

On another thread, there were some actual experience comments about trying to use modular/sectional methods to build a home layout. This is an approach we're calling TOMA - The One Module Approach.

Rather than hijack that other thread, I've moved that TOMA comment here into a new thread and I'd like to explore the topic with anyone who has actual experience trying to do TOMA-like methods for building a home layout.

Inspiration for an interesting micro switching module

I was on a business trip to Newton, Iowa, recently and did a little exploring along the Iowa Interstate mainline which runs through the town. The railroad delivers bulkhead flat cars (with sheet steel) to a siding where a trackmobile switches them into the Trinity Structural Towers plant. The company makes wind turbine super structures.

The track configuration consists of just two turnouts: one off the IAIS siding, and one to split the track at the company for holding and receiving spurs. The whole scene makes for a very interesting, albeit simple, switching module.

Getting on top of things

The older I get the more difficult it gets to rummage around under the layout, on the floor, trying to complete wiring, switch machine installation, etc.  There are ways of easing this somewhat (e.g. using suitcase connectors for wiring) but I'm wondering how far some of you may have gone to address this.  Since I tend to do all the work myself I'd be interested in any tricks/tips/hints you may have on ways to work from the top down instead of bottom up.  Suggestions for switch machines, accessing wiring for maintenance, etc.

The Whip City Railway

Evening all. Been awhile since I posted in here. Wanted to get some advice form the old heads so figured I'd post progress and plans in here. I'd appreciate any advice you folks can offer.  Below is a basic desription of what I have so far. Below that the track plan to date.

All the white will be more or less at one level. That may change as I modify things as we go.

Small yard on a Branchline

I need ideas for a track plan of a small yard on a branch line.

Design Change - Opinions/Suggestions?

The layout I currently have under construction is a free lanced plan of a fictitious portion of the N&W Pocahontas District. Being a coal hauler located in the Appalachian mountains, you would expect my layout to have a lot of grades, but such is not the case.

N scale coffee table

Does anyone know where I can get plans to build an N scale coffee table layout? I don't need so much help with the track layout, but looking for plans to build the table or any advice.

Thanks-Tim
