Dealing with the cost and what to go with

Being the drastic cost now showing  in this hobby, and faced with finally a space to plan a layout, I'm a bit torn as to direction, and seeking some input.  I model HO scale and model today'so Era but as a freelance.

Car Storage as a Layout

How about rail car storage as a layout?

You've got tons of staging, yards, a wye, two loops to turn around (put those tropes to work!). You can also use an area of turnouts sitting in place that you haven't gotten around to setting up yet as a prototypical area of expansion.

They have several SD40s and south of the sand facility you can see the tracks being built to their now-finished maintenance facility and car repair shop.

Back to HO after 20+ Years

Well I have successfully ebay'd completely all of my N-scale related stuff.  All rolling stock, loco's, scenery, structures and structure flat scenes.  So after deleting a sizeable layout I decided that a small (8 x 10) along the wall HO switching layout would be in order.

New Switching area on the CNW Peninsula Div.

I am going to use this thread to show the building of a new switching area I am adding to my CNW Peninsula Div. These pics will show the the basic foot print of the new area which is 4' x 11' overall.

More will follow as I get going.

Revisiting module

Three years and 9 months ago, I built my first module that was suppose to be attached to a second module to the left of it, as seen below, but had to cancel due to unforeseen circumstances and no space.

Just moved - Starting over with a smaller space.

Hi,

I previously had an ambitious layout and plenty of space for it, but it never really got past bench work and pink foam.  This time around I have the opportunity to start over and want to stick with a smaller layout that I can actually make some real progress on.  Once that's done, I can always add on if time allows.

I really like the idea of doing a 4x8 table design, but with a divider down the middle of the long dimension.  So really two 2x8 opportunities with an outer loop connecting everything.

Infra-red throttles and tunnels

I plan to install DCC to my almost-completed, 200 sq. ft. HO layout. Layout has long tunnel runs on perimeter. Will infra-red (IR) throttle system (e.g., Digitrax DT-402) function properly to the hidden track under the tunnel scenery (lots of plaster cloth, joint compound, rocks, trees, etc.)? I understand line-of-sight need for such IR system.

Updated Layout Plan...

Hi All,

I haven't posted an updated layout plan for awhile.  So seeing there have been some changes made to the Harrisburg Industrial Area, here is the current one with signal placement too.

Cheers,

Jas...

Initial idea for track plan

Here's kind of what I'm thinking about for a track plan. the single track on the right side of the layout is just there for reference at this point there will likely be crossings sidings etc. My thought is that side would go through some canyon with perhaps a river. Also I'm thinking of doing double main line with cross over tracks.
