Layout evolution?
I noticed a change in my layout about several years ago. I have been building for almost eight. It happened when my daughter was working on "her section". She asked where the hot glue gun was, I answered " South end of Dante Yard" She looked at me and I explained " back wall near the big tunnel at the yard, middle deck"

Sponsor that sells CVT Ties?
I need to buy some #5 CVT turnouts. I can order them from my LHS, or even drive over to Walthers and pick them up. Are there any other sponsors that sell them, I'd like to reward them for keeping MRH Forever Free. :)
Thanks,
Ryan

Pictures vs reality
I wanted to get your opinion on your take on pictures vs reality when it comes to model railroads. Looking at pictures of a model railroad is looking at only a tiny part of the overall and of course show the subject at it's best. This is true with anything that you can visit in person and also look at pictures of the same thing. As an example, lets say that you visited the Grand Canyon. Your pictures can never come close to seeing the real thing.

Anyone installed a DCC decoder in Bachmann Spectrum GP30?
Has anyone installed a decoder or sound decoder in a Bachmann Spectrum GP30? I have 2 about 10 years old with NO running time on them. I have searched the forum posts and looked at Alan Gartner's wiring for DCC web site. Alan Has some info but it is dated.
I would also like to install sound but am not sure there is space given the "frame" design. Any thoughts on where to put a speaker would be appreciated.

Time Passes
Today, as my wife and I were starting to decorate the house for Christmas, I became somewhat depressed by the fact that time is passing way to fast. Now that we are in our 70's, it seems that Christmas comes about every 6 months instead of every 12 months. As i said, just thinking about the rapid passage of time was making me feel a bit depressed until I thought of something that immediately snapped me out of my doldrums.

To expand or not....
My layout is a Proto Freelanced version of the Norfolk Franklin and Danville Railway. It is build in the basement of my home and measures out to 25x30 feet. It is an around the walls, point to point railroad and is focused on yard and local switching. I have been tossing around the idea of expanding the railroad to include a top deck. My thoughts are to increase my mainline run and model a few towns along the railroads western end. The problem is should I do i
To Change Scales or Not to Change?
I have been a fan of N scale since the 1970s. I have amassed a big collection of steam, some diesels and hundreds of billboard reefers. The last count I had over 350 reefers. I have all kinds of wood structure kits for N scale. I love the Southern Pacific style of steam engines and the Black Widow paint schemes on the SP diesels. So, I tried to narrow my collecting to SP and western styles. Over the most recent years I have tried to n

MRH vs MR
I have to say.....Hats off to the guys at MRH! I have been in this great hobby for the last 10 years and have been a subscriber to Model Railroader Magazine ever since I started in this hobby. However in recent years, the guys over at MR have kinda let me down with the contents of there magazine! It seems to me that the folks at MR are pushing the "why build it when you can buy it" motto down our throats. Whatever happened to sitting down at our workbenches and working on something? Then when all hopes of learning how to build something were gone,

GEFN
GEFN? What the heck is that? Well, it's Good Enough For Now. The concept of "Good Enough" in model railroading has been around for some time and it a wonderful concept to keep us from going detail crazy and mired down in one area while other areas suffer. I understand Good Enough, but I want more - thus the GEFN.

In the long run, or subtitled "Looking ahead"
I was idle lately being on vacation and actually had some time to do some thinking - and of course that included model railroading. I often think and plan ahead on what I want to accomplish next; however, this time it was a little different type of planning. I was thinking "what will become of my model railroad when I die?" I guess I started thinking about my morbid subject as the result of losing a good friend and model railroader, George Potter.
