Prototype Railroading

Interesting Switching Move
This video popped up in my YouTube recommendations yesterday. It shows a grain mill being switched by the local railroad. The most interesting part, for me, was the interplay and cooperation between the railroad crew and the grain mill's switcher crew. There are several other interesting videos on the same channel.

Brake pad manufactures
Looking at various industries during the 60s and 70s that could use boxcars and 2 bay covered hoppers besides the cement industries. I started thinking of brake pad manufacturing during this time period.so tonight I will be begin research. Seeing asbestos was an ingredient would this been recieved in covered hoppers or boxcars? I would believe the steel back plates would come in boxcars or steel bars in boxcars and gondolas. ANY input would be appreciated
Thank you

A missed trip
A couple of days ago, I was helping a friend by driving a truck on a construction job. It involved crossing a railroad track, the old CB&Q line from Alliance NE to Billings, MT and is part of the BNSF now. This line is now primarily a coal route although once in a while they run a unit tank train, a solid auto rack train and even the famous "Plane Train", the one with the airplane bodies on their way to Boeing, runs on this route. Sometimes we even get to see a manifest or loose car train. Well, as I approached the crossing one time, I saw a train appro

Natural Gas Fuel Tender
I just ran out for a few errands here in St Augustine FL, and got stopped by a train. It had two FEC locos on the front and a 'fuel tender' between the two. At first I thought it might be some sort of diresel fuel tank mounted on a container car chassi.
But when I came home and looked it up I found this,..

Cement Fiberboard
Im looking for pictures and info about cement fiberboad companies during the 60s-70s .what railcars would be bring raw materials in and any out bound products.
Thank you

Grain operations on a modern regional
The topic of grain operations on modern regional railroads recently came up on the Yahoo Proto-Layouts list. I thought I'd post my reply here as well in case the information I compiled is helpful to others. My information was gathered with regard to the Iowa Interstate, but the principles should apply elsewhere.

You Call That a Tank Car?...
....Now that's a Tankcar!
No not really but its origin is obvious!
It is actually several scrapped tank cars welded together to form a pipe. Not sure if it was done for an actual job or just to prove they could do it.
It was done by The Railroad Yard, Inc. a company which supplies scrapped tank cars for culverts and bridges.

Main line and mill railroads
Im looking for a protype railroad that delivered cars to a mill railroad. The kicker is the main line railroad uses a small 70 tonner or centercab and the mill railroad uses a gp7 any protypes fit that description?
Thank you
