Prototype Railroading

Older auto transport

Here is an idea for a vintage layout.Cars were transported in boxcars I think into the fifties. The attached movies is form the twenties.

How many board feet in a boxcar?

Before WWII, my father worked as a timber cruiser in a lumber operation at the place where South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia come together.

He said they shipped a million board feet of lumber by rail, presumably from a mill in West Union, SC.  A million feet a year?  A million feet a month?  Dad isn't around to ask.

Assuming 36 and 40 foot box cars and 40 foot flats and gone, how many pre-war cars would it take to ship a million board feet of lumber?

Thanks for expertise!!

Alternative Rail Transportation

I received an email from a friend, Forrest Becht, this morning.  Forrest has done lots of rail photography over the years, and the email contained a half dozen images that he had captured during the time that he was the General Manager of the Louisiana and Delta Railroad.  Two of the photos caught my attention and, with Forrest's permission, I'm posting them here along with his captions for the pictures.

This is a rather unusual method of transporting rail traffic (see caption below photo):

Prototypical Operation Instruction

I have zero experience operating a model railroad much less the real thing. I am clueless ( just found out being a railfan has a name associated, " Foamer " ) and I need some sources for prototypical railroad operations. Would/could anyone direct me towards a book, video, a web site that I could delve into and try to educate myself? Many thanks in advance for any and all help.

Marking the ownership of tracks?

I was headed over to the state park east of my house and to get there I have to cross the UP (ex-C&EI) line. I hadn't been that way in awhile and I discovered that the rail was marked at the crossing:

I've never seen this before and the track is a good mile and half from the next nearest track, the CN (formerly IC) main that runs from Chicago to New Orleans.  It's marked this way on both sides of the crossing.

Trip to England and France

I am thinking about a trip to see London an Paris and I have a couple of days free (no plans yet) so is there some "must see" train related place in England or France that I should go to?

i am already planning to take the train through the Chunnel and perhaps the TGV to southern France.

Annoyed with TLT

On True Line Trains website, it states that "We've updated the tooling on these models with more correctly shaped windows." regarding the second release of the offset cupola caboose and the new release of the transfer van. I called the hobby shop today and asked twice to make sure if the newest run of the offset cupola caboose has the proper rectangual windows like the transfer van has, and the clerk said yes. Excited off I went on my over one hour commute to get there only to discover the clerk was wrong not to mention True Line Trains.

Reefer question

Would an express reefer like this ever be used on a branch line in the mid fifties?

Is anyone modeling the CMQ?

I'm fascinated by the Central Maine & Quebec Railroad; is anyone out there modeling this railroad?
