Prototype Railroading

Flat Car lengths
Hi, Looking for info:
I'm planning on scratch building a flatcar in 1:29 scale. Does anybody know what was the shortest flat car
that would be found on Canadian Railroads circa 1980's? ( With regular 4 wheel trucks ).
Dimensions would be great but not absolutely necessary as I mainly want Minimum length.
Thanks,
Robert Hall
Marking clearance points at turnouts
I am wondering if prototype railroads had any physical indications along the tracks to indicate clearance points at turnouts: the place beyond which a piece of rolling stock would not clear rolling stock passing by on the other route of the turnout. I have looked at lots of railroad photographs and can't see anything that seems to serve this purpose. When I ride the local commuter rail, I don't see anything like this either. On the subway platforms and on some passenger platforms, I see markings to let the engineer know where to stop if the train is X cars long.&nb
A new book on early PA logging.
Pictures are from 8x10 glass plates. Slide 2 of a shay and 12 of a Barnhardt log loader are just great.

Switcher differences
Hi @all,
can someone explain me the optical differences between a MP15DC, MP15AC and MP15T?
Thanks and regards,

Circus and Circus Train ride into the sunset...
Such a sad way for the Ringling Bros. Circus to end. Growing up on LI in the 70's I remember seeing the train parked on sidings in the Garden City, LI area. A great site to behold.

Sad to see it go out this way..

C&O Historical Society gets an SD-40 donated to it.
I read in the last COHS (C&O Historical Society) magazine that CSX donated a surplus SD-40 to it. It will eventually be repainted into as-delivered C&O paint and possibly be run on the Buckingham Branch Railroad.
I don't have any other information, I just thought it was a bit of cool news. If anyone knows more than me about it, please share! :) I might be up for a road trip from Michigan to West Virginia (or wherever) to photograph a C&O unit in action!
Industries that use Steel Coil
Picking industries for a future layout. Besides the auto industry, what industries would take delivery of steel coils carried by modern steel coil cars?

Frog Trivia
Joe Fugate's book on trackwork has much sage advice, and a focal point is frogs in chapter 10. The merit of dead and live frogs is discussed, along with the frog juicer. Frogs are often considered amphibious swamp creatures, so all this talk of turnout frogs got me wondering about the term's origin. Some wikipedia info:
Question: Amtrak #6 eastbound at Truckee, CA
Hello,
I have watched the eastbound California Zephyr (Amtrak #6) a few times on the Truckee webcam:
http://tahoetopia.com/webcam/downtown-truckee
It is always the same procedure: The trains pulls into Truckee station and the crossing gates in direction of the train at Bridge Str. close. A few minutes later the gates open while the train is still loading and unloading. That I do understand.
