Prototype Railroading

How much work could/would be done in a 2 stall engine house?

Can a typical engine house do the same amount of repair and maintenance as a roundhouse, or are they usually more limited in what they do?

Filling diesels with sand

I am designing a small diesel servicing area for my early 1950's layout.  I'll have a track for servicing diesels that is long enough to handle an A-B set of F units, for example.  From photos, I can see that it was not unusual to have two fuel stands spaced so that the A and B unit could be fueled at the same time.  I think maybe the same holds true for water columns to top off locomotive engine cooling water.

Coal in small amounts

I wonder which type of customers will need coal in small amounts - only three coal hoppers in this train at 0:48:

One-way Runaround?

I found this little runaround that appears to be still active but has the switch stands removed at the far end, at the turnout leading to the industries and at the turnout for an abounded industry.

Running List of Historical Research Resources?

I don't know if MRH has a running list of resources for modelers researching historical information, but I thought starting such a thread might be useful. Organizing into different themes might be useful too. I think more experienced prototype modelers tend to think that everyone already knows about this stuff, but than a question pops up and people have never heard of them before.

Thoughts?

I have a Prototype Question for you about................

....................heat restrictions.  Yesterday I met a guy from Phoenix, AZ and the discussion, as it often does, turned to heat.  He mentioned to me that Sky Harbor airport had halted flight operations as the temp reached 123 degrees.

That got me thinking that here in upstate NY the RR's put speed restrictions on operations when the temp reaches around 93 degrees due to possible heat kinks.

My question is how do the RRs in the hot areas like Phoenix handle the rail expansion of 123 degree heat?

Tourist season ideas

Since Memorial Day weekend usually marks the beginning of tourist season, I thought I would provide a list of possible destinations (or at least side trips) for you and your families.  Please add on to the list, especially any places you may have visited.

Rochelle Diamond Track Replacement

Watching the Rochelle Webcam I caught some track work going on. The past few days they have been replacing panels and word is this weekend they will be doing the diamond itself.

Calling Ore-Hauling modellers : switching ore grades for transloading

Dear DM&IR and other Ore-Hauler modellers,

A random question if I may. I'm thinking of a DM&IR scene,
an SD9 assigned to shoving mini-quad sets of 22' shorty ore-hoppers up onto the dock(?) for transloading/dumping into an ore boat.
