Prototype Railroading
TGV
I recently took the EuroStar from London to Paris. Then the TGV from Paris to Avignon, the the TGV from Avignon to Tour and Finaly the TGV from Tours back to Paris. And in general I was not impressed.
Railroad stories
Part of what modeling does is create a sense of what a certain place and time feels like. Sometimes we're recreating personal experiences, other times we're imagining things we've heard or read about. I've been trying to squeeze in time for reading and found that there are many self-published memoirs by railroad workers available (along with a smaller number of professionally edited works). These all provide mental color and texture to my modeling endeavors and are also satisfying in themselves.
What reporting mark and some prototype covered hopper tops for weathering
On Oct 4th I went for a walk across a new overpass and came across this interesting grouping. (Larger picture to follow). of course, all I had on this chance encounter was an iPhone camera.
SW1200 RS ??
Is there any physical difference between an SW1200 and SW1200RS . What does the RS designate ? An inquiring mind wants to know. Thanks in advance.
Wheels
Came across these racks of wheels at a warehouse.

Railroads Hauling of Rock Salt
I have spent some time planning a switching layout based on the Troy NY industrial layout that was in RMC a couple of years ago. CSX and CP switch three customers, a feed mill, a logistics warehouse in the old NYC freighthouse and stored road salt. I want to back date to about 1984 and substitute DH and Conrail locomotives, already acquired. I think currently a lot of salt comes off the Genessee and Wyoming in 2 bay ACF cars. But I don't know where the salt came from and how it was hauled back in 1984. Would old PS 2 bay hoppers be a good guess?

MU, Brake, Sand, and Other Hoses
Hi everyone,
I am detailing an SD45 and was looking for information on mu hoses for locomotives during the 1960's and 1970's. I have found a lot of general information on what locomotives have but not a visual of each hose and it's purpose. Here is a picture, could someone markup it up or point me to a good resource that shows these details such as a schematic drawing?
Thanks.
