SWITCHING YARD WITHOUT A TURNTABLE?

Given space considerations on the n-scale layout I am planning, I am finding that not having a turntable would save space.  However, I am not sure about operational considerations for my freight/ switching yard as a result.

What has been the experience regarding design and operation of switching yards without a turntable?  by the way, I do not have the room for a "Y".  What are the pros and cons?  Is there a better or best way to design a switching yard without a turntable?

Space layout help

Seeking some suggestions, as I am starting to plan my layout to fill a room that the exterior is 20ft x 20ft.  My plan is a double deck layout.  What is typically the best way to use the space to it's fullest use.  My isle will be min width of 24 inches.  I know if I use a helix, that will take room, and a no-lix requires run, so overall if you can suggest the best way, it will be helpful.

Thanks,

Nate

Interesting track plan, Tupper Lake & Faust Junction

This plan appeared in the Handbook #15, Track Planning Ideas from Model Railroader, (58 track plans from past issues), multiple printings beginning in 1981.

I'm interested in posting a scan of that layout plan from my issue of that magazine, so that it might be discussed here on the forum. BUT, I can not find an active webpage reference to that track plan to make a proper link to it.

So I suppose I can post my copy of the layout plan since I have gone to the trouble of trying to find an archived one, and given due respect to the original author/source

Fantasy Paint Schemes for Locos & Rolling Stock

B&O loco fantasy paint scheme paint job.

Looking thru some of my inventory the other day, and ran across this unfinished project/idea. It originated when I saw an 'unusual' paint scheme that actually appeared on some B&O passenger cars. At first I wanted to know if the passenger cars actually appeared in those colors ?

Hi guys,

Track Charts

I am in the early stages of planning and I was wondering if anyone out there would have copies of track charts that cover both the ATSF and SP routes from the Richmond CA area to the Pittsburg CA area. My model timeframe is 1969 in HO scale. This is a route that travels approx 35 miles. If I am wrong (and I am frequently), please feel free to alter my way of thinking. Below is the initial sketch (beer coaster if you will) of the routes. Sorry about the ATSF route, but on the screen the red showed up fairly well.

Enlarging layout plans - where to get it done?

Can anyone can tell me where to get my layout plan enlarged to full size I've seen this in magazines but they never tell you where to get these done any help will be greatly appreciated.

ps I tried Staples they are a huge waste

Thanks, Pat

Visual Balance or How Much is TOO Much ?

Lance Mindheim writes in his book " How to Design a Small Switching Layout ", he identifies a problem or a " common " pitfall. Lance points out :

One of the most common design errors is to over reach. That is trying to include more track or elements than the square footage of the scene can support visually. "

Displaced is a Great Thing

Well we have absorbed some family displaced by Hurricane Harvey. The end result is my layout room has been re-purposed and it was a no-brainer. I still have the green light to build a layout, but smaller is the keyword here so I am now in the attic space with a total area of 8' x 8' for now. I am still trying to fall within the TOMA idea however I have had to move from a continuous running layout to a switching layout. There are no reversing loops or anything complicated other than a heck of a 4% grade to rise up from a lower level.

ATSF 2nd District: The Cucamonga - Pasadena - East LA RR (TOMA)

Hi all,

Following good advice and lots of research i ended up with a draft version of the trackplan for the layout for my current space. As previously discussed in a TOMA related thread of mine (where i got considerable help), the idea is that i rework things on my current space by building TOMA modules originating from the desing of my future permanent layout in a next/future house. So thanks to the TOMA ideas and inspiration, i will be able to start working on my future layout now (or relatively soon :) ).
