Dream and design
Looking for an 13' by 4' layout
Hey guys, been using model trains for years, but finally have the space for an actual permanent layout. I was wondering if any of you SCARM masters have any ideas as to what I could do? Or even a layout around that size I could work from?
Looking at a layout for passengers and freight, have a few new locos coming, so I want a decent setup now!
Thanks for any help!
Kind Regards
Dan
Cad cam software
I am not sure if this is the proper forum.
I am a rookie on SketchUp, and what I want to do is create a cube, similar to a child's block.
This would be a cube, with a letter on each face. The letter would be recessed into the surface.
For example, the letter "N" would be made of three rectangles. How would I "unite" them, and "extrude"
them into the cube, in unison. And not have a "surface" over the letter.
cheers,

Interesting Track Plan, Castleville County
Interesting track plan of a layout that just appeared on ebay. There is a lot of train running possibilities on this relatively small layout (9.7 x 10.8). Thought it might be interesting to post, and solicit comments.
Jenks Blue in Fort Smith
Finally finished my layout plans for the future train room. (House construction is still on schedule to be completed in April)
For this next layout I wanted to model a “real world” location in Arkansas served by the Missouri Pacific. This includes industries and landmarks that existed during my 70s-80s modeling era. I considered several areas in Arkansas but when researching Missouri Pacific operations in Fort Smith, “I was hooked!”

Model Railroad in a Bonus Room
Hello all. Quick question:
I'm soon moving to North Carolina and most of the houses that my wife and I have looked at renting have a fairly large bonus room. The open space of these rooms gets my model railroader senses tingling, but there's a problem: the "knee walls" that cove in to fit the contour of the roof.
Has anyone built a layout in a bonus room or attic and how did you overcome this?

Bedroom Layout
I have been searching for many hours today to find an internet image of a bedroom layout I recall seeing a number of years ago when I was looking thru MANY magazines for model railroad items scenery, layout designs etc. I was searching in response to a particular person who was looking for just such information. I recall making copies of this layout idea to be passed out at my friends train shop, to those city people who just might be looking for a 'bedroom/spare room layout'.

New space - time for dream and design
I finally sold the townhouse with it's 10x18' basement layout space and with correspondingly longer commute recently moved into a home with a decent sized basement. Here are photo's of the space. I haven't had time to sit down yet and sketch the dimensions on a 11x17' sheet of graph paper to scale, what with all the unpacking and projects to do (new applicances, Radon system, new hot water heater, new counter tops and sink etc.). The Radon mitigation system has already been installed last Monday.
The New CB&Q in Wyoming
I have spent the past several months while awaiting retirement (end of March next year) planning my new layout.
After running through configuration after configuration, I think I finally have it down. It combines a walk-around plan with a partial mushroom.
Pretty much all aspects of the design are still open to adjustment, and if anyone has any ideas - any at all, be they off-the-wall, tried-and-true, pure conjecture or anything else, I'd like to hear them. I'm always open to improvements!
SPEV Layout Designing
One of my other hobbies is Model Rocketry, and sometimes people design a rocket out of spare parts:

SPEV stands for Spare Parts Elimination Vehicle. I've built a few rockets out of odds and ends--leftover balsa, tubes, nosecones-- and it can be fun coming up with something out of what's at hand:
