SMA29 JMRI Turnout Channels – Direct JMRI to Arduino Communications - Simple Support for Lots of Data Out From JMRI

The Java Model Railroad Interface (JMRI) is an elegant but sometimes complex application growing in popularity beyond its fantastic facility to ease DCC decoder setup. It is free, widely used, and readily available. It has capabilities to monitor trains and track to enable control and signal systems for virtually any model railroad layout. Among its basic control elements are turnouts, usually referring to a track switch or set of “points” but in its most elemental form, really refers to a binary switch.

Rio Grande Southern 20 rebuild progress, and Strasburg RR visit

I got a chance to see Rio Grande Southern 20's rebuild progress, and discovered lots of cool equipment at Strasburg!

Some Operational Lessons from My First Layout

Having completed my first layout to as much as I intend to, I've been having a bit of a play. The track plan consists of a pair of 5-3-3 Inglenook yards:

Linked by a short runaround loop, which  due to space constraints can only take three wagons:

Layout tour of the beautiful WNJ-layout

Hi! The WNJ-layout has been a big source of inspiration for me all since I was a child back in the 70s. I have now (finally) been able to visit the layout first hand and make a video documentary. Enjoy!

This layout is only open for the public a few hours during one day per year. No photos or film has been allowed until quite recently.

URR Track Plan for 2x8 switching layout

Hi all:

Some time ago, I blogged about my process of choosing what to model after returning to the hobby.  I was deciding between Conrail, a proto-freelance concept I had come up with twenty years or so ago or modeling the Union Railroad in Pittsburgh.  I ended up choosing the Union Railroad because my grandfather was an engineer with them, retiring in 1976.  That is the year I have chosen to model because of the variety of motive power and operations still available.

SMA28 JMRI Sensor Channels – Direct Arduino to JMRI Communications - Simple Support for Lots of Detectors

There are many applications in animation and model railroading where sensing a position of a loco or car is convenient and essential for operation.  Signaling, actuation, etc. require not only the use of an appropriate sensor but also sensor coordination and communication with some form of model, animation, or layout control.  The Java Model Railroad Interface (JMRI) is one such control that I started using early in my animation work, and is free, widely used, and readily available.

JMRI Operation - Question About Managing a Shared

I’m actually trying to figure out how use a pool of car for two similar industries in JMRI Operation.

Basically, the layout has two different lumber yards which have different trailing point position. It means cars have to be dropped off at other locations (the closest yard) to be picked up by the opposite direction train back to staging.

-Léo Cauchon – Facing East – Receives Lumber from Limoilou, ships Empty to Limoilou. Empty are sent to Beaupré Yard before being picked up by westbound train #523 en route to Limoilou.

Planning a better lasercut turntable

Drew up the cad files then did a test rendering to make sure it all fits together this one will use a slip ring for power to the rails and thankfully planning wise fit together perfectly!

Op Session #9 : The Wetmore Special - Tweaking the plan

On Oct 4, 2018 I hosted an op session for Don Wetmore, a former co-worker and modeler who recently moved to Florida and was back for a visit.  It was an "OFS" (old fart session) held during the day and staffed with retired guys, actually all of the members were retired railroad.

The other reason I wanted to hold a session is I wanted to try out some changes I had made to the operations based on feedback and observations from session #8.
