Moving out and up

Some folks who've been around the forums here may remember my layout (22 stories up), a HO scale scale, sectionally built layout loosely based on the Central Vermont Railway's Barre Vermont branch.

I had a lot of fun building the layout, and it was a great learning experience for me.

Made a Decision on Operations for My Layout

I decided last year to get back into the model railroading and have spent the winter cleaning out the basement spare room and unpacking/assessing my equipment after 20 years in storage. I had a layout with completed trackwork and some scenery and have been looking it over to ascertain the needs to rewire it for DCC.

Oops.

Since I now have a respectable length (~60', N-scale) of mainline laid, including a runaround at the far end, I got the rolling stock out and started to run some trains. Which means I'm finding things like dodgy track work and this:

Double-stack won't clear mousehole

And that, children, is why your NMRA track and clearance gauge is your friend.

Help get an entry for MRH in Wikipedia

I noticed that Wikipedia has entries in the train publishing area for Model Railroader and Railroad Model Craftsman, but none for Model Railroad Hobbyist.

In the interest of completeness, Wikipedia needs an entry for MRH, but when I tried to make one, they jumped all over me for self-interest reasons.

I don't blame them, but somebody who's not associated with MRH but who knows something about Wikipedia entries needs to come to our defense.

Out with the old, in with the new

Just posted on TrainMasters TV - Act II of the March show: End of The Line: Dismantling a layout ... here's an out-take!

TrainMasters TV producer Barry Silverthorn sat down with Lionel Strang to discuss 20 years of building the Allegheny & Lackawanna Southern,  Before you know it, Lionel talks himself into a new plan.

An update picture of my layout....sort of...

Not to long ago after someone here gave me some advice and help on my layout plan and I instituted some of their suggested changes I was asked for pictures of my layout.  I had promised to make some but then I got involved with a layout project and neglected to make any. I still haven't. Not pictures of the layout anyway but I did decide to snap a quick cell phone shot of what I've been involved with the past few days and there is a little of the layout showing.

Roy's Train World in Mesa, AZ is Closing after 40 years.

Roy’s Train World March, 2014

February 2014 marked our 40th year serving the model railroading community. Over the last 40 years we have seen remarkable changes in the hobby. Some have been amazing and some real head scratchers! As a store we have worked with model railroad enthusiasts to help improve the hobby and make it more enjoyable for all.

Getting started... shelf layout plan

Long time lurker joining the fray…. After several years of having the trains packed away, I’ve finally secured a small right of way in a corner of the basement family room. The plan below is for a 12’ x 6’, L-shaped HO scale layout for switching now and potential expansion down the road. As much as I think modeling a prototype road would be great, I’m more interested in getting out of the armchair soon – even if the effort turns out to be a chainsaw. So I’ve created enough of a back-story to get started.
