A Fancy dress on a horrible mess! (sub titled: Fascia curtain - now you see it...now you don't!)

My "multi-purpose" room (work office & layout) is a horrible mess!  My Richlawn Railroad layout has so much stuff jammed under it (and on top of it) that I had to do something.  Some months ago I purchased some black cloth for the fascia curtain and I decided to temporarily put it up using push pins to secure it to the layout woodwork.  Before I did that I pleated it using my hot glue gun to give it a little interest.  It's likely that I'll have some visitors to the layout during the holidays so this will help hide much of the junk.  Now I just

Wires, buildings and painting

The winter weather has settled in up here on Schist Lake. Our lake has 10 inches of ice and enough snow to take the snowmobile out for a ride. Since I don't own a snowmobile, I have been out snow shoeing for exercise. When not in front of the tv or computer, I am up in the layout room working away.

I have been doing the yearly maintenance required to run the layout without too many issues. Several locomotives and cars have all been cleaned, greased and oiled as required.

Workin' on Joint Bars - for the BNML

I realized some time ago that I'm going to need hundreds of joint bars for the BNML and a recent discussion ( Staggered rail joints measurements info needed ) here on MRH got me inspired to begin working on them.

The Real Deal:

Test driving my new shelves from Precision Design Company

As soon as I heard Bill Brillinger was selling his little shelves he had in his blog, I jumped on the opportunity to pick up a few.  I ordered them last week and received them yesterday.  While I was watching the Oilers play terribly, come back strong and then lose in overtime, I put two of them together.

This is what I had when I first opened the package:

Scale Model Animation 14: Grade (or Level) Crossing Control

Model animation—bringing models to life—adds enormously to the interest and enjoyment of any layout or individual model! This edition covers one element for animating grade crossings—triggering and control using infrared detectors, servo motors, LEDs, and an Arduino Pro Mini for timing and control.

Nelson and Fort Sheppard Railway :: Beaver Creek Bridge

After leaving the Upper Yard area we come across the area that is called beaver creek corner.  This area is next on the construction schedule.  It will include the turnout at the end of the Arrival/Departure track to get on the main line, some signals, and of course a bridge over Beaver Creek.

Messing with mirrors

My sloping ceiling makes for some challenging areas to work on and this is no exception. I wanted the stream or cut to appear as though it goes beyond the modeled area where the line ducks into staging. The foam helps fill the gaps and is hard to reach so before I have the mirrors cut to shape it seemed prudent to give it a look-see. The pieces are scraps from a broken mirror and I hope a shop can cut a hole for the train to pass or maybe some trees can be used to cover the gap. Any suggestions would be helpful here.

Middle school model RR: vertical curves

I’ve been stuck for a few weeks trying to decide how to break a log jam. The benchwork sections have been resting idle, loosely bolted together and leaning against the wall but not fastened to it. I have a new crop of students who have been happily learning the basics of car movement, coupling, inertia, switch operations, etc. on the Inglenook, but a few of them have begun to paw the ground, eager to get going on the big layout.

Where did I get all this stuff?

As I'm tearing down the old layout, I'm uncovering all this stuff.  It looks like a hobby shop threw up in my train room.  I found about 30 DPM/Walthers/Smalltown USA buildings for my never built city, that I had started to assemble but never finished, in addition to several boxes of books, and some scenery stuff.

What's on my workbench (pallet) this week - Completed!

**** UPDATED 11-12-14 ****  I've completed the painting.  Please check the posting further down in this thread

My apologies that this post isn't exactly a model railroad subject; however it's closely related.  You see, a few months ago I attempted to hand paint the backdrop for my Richlawn Railroad.  I couldn't paint one to my satisfaction, but the experience ignited a desire to paint within me.  The idea wasn't to replace model railroading with painting, but to have an alternative hobby that I enjoy.
