Sometimes you have to be in the mood ...

Sometimes you have to be in the mood to paint ... or do wiring, or ballasting, or whatever it is that is not a "preferred" model project. It's not that I don't like painting or soldering, etc but I like to build models or structures, trees, freight cars, - well you know. Painting a backdrop is always something that seems like it should be done before the roadbed or scenery gets started so access is easy but I don't really have a picture in my head of what the area will look like until it gets started. I plan for a living so when I get home it's anything but ...

Some photos of the original layout

A couple of shots of the original layout under construction, the colors in the snapshots are weird, it looked better in person :-)

Building the Ashland & Back Shortline Model Railroad

Starting a new project; I built a modest 4X8 ft. HO scale railroad about 15 years ago, my second. Major inspiration came from Malcolm Furlow's San Juan Central project featured in MR magazine in the eighties. The concept was a freelanced  standard-gauge shortline with a narrow-gauge feel. Although I'm a fan of the D&RGS Narrow gauge prototype I already owned some standard gauge power and rolling stock so it was a virtual narrow-gauge effort.

Getting Organized

I've spent some time getting organized around the railroad this past week.

I built Shelving for my paints and boxes to organize my waybills in.

Paint Shelving; I started out with my table saw and 1/4" plywood and quickly realized this was dumb. I'm not that good at cutting small parts and getting joints to line up is just a pain - so I turned to the laser cutter and created shelf pieces in minutes that are straight and key together. I made the backs from task board - but I cut that with a knife ;)

Transfer Terminal Kitbash: Adventures In CNC

Sometimes a person has to go a very long distance out of his way to come back a short distance correctly. - Edward Albee, "Zoo Story"

Yes, it's been quiet around here. Summer included a lot of travel -- since the beginning of August we've been away more than we've been home -- and not a whole lot got done in the basement.

The State of the Layout Report

I've been working on the railroad, at odd hours of the day!

To see progress on my little small layout adventure, check it out on my blog here: http://joshuadewolfe.wordpress.com/2014/10/17/the-state-of-the-layout-report/

There are lots of pictures (18 total) so if you have a slow or limited connection-you've  been warned.
