Modeling general discussion

I'm Back
Well today I got the splint off from my second carpal tunnel surgery. I had my right hand done in September and was no sooner healed from that then they called me for my left hand. It is such a treat to be able to type again, not to mention to be able to work on a model. I've been quiet but lurking and reading, looking forward to being more of a participant again.
Reality sets in - selling some equipment...
Over the last two years I have been on a constant declutter program around the house. A bit ironic since it started after we moved to a property twice the size of the previous property and hold on to things a lot easier without it being in the way.
So over the time I have sold excess hi-fi equipment (another hobby of mine), lots of books have left the house and I have gotten rid of unused computer equipment, electronics and so on. I kinda have started to like looking at empty floorspace, no crap in cupboards and so on. Simplify and focus...

LED Lighting for your Layout - one way to do it downloadable PDF file
Currently there are a couple of threads on MRH about LED room lighting. I've posted previously on my MRH blog on my conversion to LED for my layout room and the thread became fairly lengthy. Thank you to all that posted your comments to that thread!
I've recycled and condensed that thread into a downloadable PDF for those who what a quicker read and I've posted it on my Richlawn Railroad website. You can follow the link below and right click on the file to download it.
Who's making this building?
Hi all,
I recently saw this building on a modular layout (HO scale) at the US RR Convention in Rodgau, Germany. I snapped a quick photo but I didn't have a chance to track down the person who built this module and ask: who makes this building?
I haven't been able to find it online (walthers, etc). It would be perfect for an empty lot on my layout.
Any ideas?
Thank you,
Guido

Supplemental battery power?
Before starting to lay track on my new layout I'd like to explore the possibilities of supplemental battery power so I could only wire up the connecting tracks and leave the turnouts dead. This would greatly simplify the wiring and eliminate the need for tortoise or blue point controllers to power the frogs. It seems like a small battery could power the locos over the dead rails as long as they could recharge on the bulk of the track when running? The Stanton S-cab sounds like about what I want but I don't know anyone who has one.

Layout Lighting: Fluorescent T5HO vs. LED fixtures - options, cost and maximizing light
Presently I am on a modest budget and have installed 4 sets of standard dual 4 foot long T8 32 watt fixtures in my 10x18' layout room. They are pretty good, but I need to add two or three more fixtures to get full coverage.
Rather than buy more of the same fixtures, I would like to add in a couple of brighter fixtures and am considering what looks like two possible solutions: T5HO fluorescent fixtures or LED fixtures.
A Christmas n-scale layout...
Well, I want to start a small layout for Christmas in n-scale. My son and his wife gave me a pair of micro trains PRR heavyweight passenger cars, so I thought I would do a Pennsy layout. (they both went to school at Penn State, too, and the layout would essentially be a loosely translated Bellefonte, PA)
Opinions on mounting LED strip lights for layout lighting?
I plan to use LED strip lights to light a significant portion of my new layout. The layout is a mushroom design with 3 levels. I plan to light the lower and middle levels using the LED strip lights. Each strip is 5 meters (about 16 ft) long. I plan to use 2 parallel LED light strips mounted to the bottom of the benchwork of the level above. Lighting the lower/middle levels will require approximately 30 of these 16ft light strips (240 linear feet * 2 = 480 linear feet of strip lighting).

Uncoupling inside a building
I model HO scale, Kadee couplers with the trip pin removed from the Kadee. A skewer is used for uncoupling.
As I'm progressing on the layout and thinking of buildings, how do I uncouple a car once the car is in the building? Do I need to position the coupler a specific way first? Then push the car in and pull back, leaving the car in place? Thanks.
