Modeling general discussion

A Vanadium Ore Mine, no name yet.
I'm building a diorama as a tribute to Verne Niner.
Die Cutter Macines
So I have been looking at various devices that will help me in my modeling.
I looked at CNC routers but the cost to get one that is accurate enough for our hobby is price prohibitive at something north of $1500.
Lasers are high priced and limited in what they can cut due to damage to the laser or mirrors or the gas is extremely toxic.
And 3D printers that are affordable produce crusader details, then most folks would like.
Note I am not saying these devices don't have there use I am just saying the are expensive and limited.
Weekly Photo Fun - December 4th to December 10th, 2015
Great work everyone last week! Time to start of this week's photo thread!
As always, we get as much out of your in-process photos as we do the highly polished "all done" shots!

Need Help finding 100-Ton Barber S-2 -- HO Scale Truck Frames-- #40001 by InterMountain
Years ago (1990's) I purchased a set (24 different numbers) of Kansas City Southern grain hoppers (KITS) by InterMountain. A friend assembled the kits for me, as the task was beyond my skill.
The grain cars had great detail but came with plastic snap together truck frames and 36" plastic wheels. The snap together trucks flex too much causing them to come apart when running. I have lost several cars which fell into the canyon!! (Off the layout to the concrete basement floor.) The set has been in a box since that date.

35 second video of the islands at the base of Misti Mountain on my Richlawn RR layout
Another "mini" video using my Cube micro camcorder - this time the subject is the three islands at the base of Misti Mountain. There will also be a island in the foreground towards the edge of the layout.
TT scale switcher
Got a new MTB TT scale loco today. Out of the box runs great, just needs handrails and couplers installed plus a bit of weathering. Great service from Euro Train Hobby of New Jersey. Ordered it on Monday and got it in Cali Wednesday. Now I have something to pull my newer era TT scale cars....DaveB
Minicam
I recently purchased a minicam with sound, the one in the Micro-Mark catalogue. I have been only able to get it to work on my expensive Toshiba high-def TV. If I hook it up to my cheaper, but newer Dynex, the picture rolls like the old tube-types when the tuning is not quite right. There is no vertical adjustment control. At our clubhouse, there are 3 older TV's with the big video tube. Same thing, the picture rolls. I can't figure it out. Why does the minicam work with one TV and not others? Anyone else out there h

23 second video of work in process at the base of Misti Mountain
Rock work continues on the Richlawn RR at the base of Misti Mountain. There will be water on both sides of the track along with a few islands. The video was shot with my new "Cube" micro camcorder on a flat car by pushing it along the track. There's just a "tiny" bit of clutter on the layout!
Benchwork
Hello all,
I am playing around with some ideas on bench work for a layout I am planning. What I have planned so far is a 12' long by 14" wide layout. I do plan on using 1/2" Birch ply for the frame and top by roughly 40" high. I would also like to have a backdrop and controlled lighting on top, essentially a photo box. I have not seen any examples of a layout like that being free standing, but mounted in the wall. I understand that would be preferred, but would it be doable as a self standing layout or will that be a bit top heavy.
