Modeling general discussion

Misckatonic HO Railroad in The Escapist
I happened across this article in The Escapist, about the fictional city of Arkham, by H.P. Lovcraft, and the guy who built an HO model of it for his take on the Miskatonic Railroad.
The article is less about model railroading, and more about the inspiration behind building one, but the pictures show some excellent modeling.
Do you have a Kato Turntable
If so would you care to mention if you are satisfied with this item. I have watched the video re operation etc.Looks good but a hefty amount to outlay.
Thanks Tom

Could I see pics of your layout?
Hi
I wanted to see if some or all of you could post pictures here of your layouts as I wanted some more insparation for my layout. I'm modeling the southeastern area in the steam era so pictures like that would be great, and any coal mines. That's just what I'm looking for but I'd like to see any you would be willing to share.
Thank you!
Ian

Unloading grain boxcars
Hey...
Does anyone have photos or video of how grain was UNLOADED from boxcars in the '50s they can post or reference with a hyper-link? I'm building a moderately big flour mill so I'm not so interested in guys with shovels. I also don't have space to model the mechanisms that grabbed a car and tilted it back and forth, shaking it until all the grain ran out the doors.
I am interested in photos of winch operated "mormon boards" or a suction devices that would have been used to speed up unloading (over several guys with big shovels.

Collector or modeler?
When I was a younger modeler I wanted this car or that locomotive. Sometimes I'd search eBay international listings to find something I wanted from overseas. I could and still sometimes go to a train show and fill my arms with stuff. But as I've matured I'm less interested in collecting and more interested in modeling. I'm currently working on plans for modeling two different prototypes of which no models exists.
Anybody else here find themselves shifting from. Collector to modeler?
Matt

I know better but...
I'm not new to modeling. I have built several craftsman kits out of wood. I have read numerous books and articles on modeling with wood. A piece of wood should be stained BEFORE gluing in order to prevent excess glue from getting in the way of the stain penetrating the wood. This isn't new information folks. Yet me, being an I don't know what, have glued together 2 walls using board by board construction and where the joints are, I can see where small amounts of glue have seeped out and the stain won't stain in those places.
Number 4 - 5 - 6 turnouts and yard ladder design (HO)
I'm an N scale kind of guy helping out a friend who is adding a new peninsula to an older layout to provide more operating interest. On this peninsula he will be dedicating most of the area to a yard and he asked me some questions I wasn't too sure about, I'm not totally bilingual N/HO. He was mentioning that John A recommended number 6 turnouts for yard ladders and he was wondering if this is rather excessive.

Opto sensers
I would like to hear from people that have used opto sensors. Size, appearance, How noticeable are they?
