Modeling general discussion

Household model train negotiations

I have claimed a room (smallish) for my trains. In that room I have freedom to model trains away to my hearts delight, build this, build that, make holes in the wall etc. So recently we had to update our smallish lounge room and we planned to have a narrow wall/book shelf, floor to ceiling on 2 of the walls. This could have in it knick knacks books etc. Then I suggested we lift all the cupboards/shelves that were above approx 4' up another 9" to have a long narrow space on the 2 walls, to break it up. My wife ask why would do that?

Turnout controls?

Is there a way to secure caboose hobbies ground throws to insulation foam on layout? Would I have to cut out squares and glue in softwood to screw in throws?

Assembly problem: GHQ Log Loader kit (N scale)

Has anyone else assembled this kit? In every picture I can find, the small boom (left) looks like its supposed to fit between inside the joint at the end of the big one (right). But obviously, this won't work. The instructions aren't helpful on this point. I have two of this kit, so it's unlikely to be damage to the kit.

How a particular scene looked back at the time? (Pasadena late 60s)

Hello everyone,

I was unsure of where this topic might fit best so i am using the general discussion.

I have been doing some research on the scenery adjacent to the mainline of my prototype for my era (1968-70), Pasadena subdivision, ATSF LA division. Specifically for the part between Arroyo parkway and Lake avenue, ie the mainline parallel to Colorado boulevard, a few blocks north of the said boulevard.

Kadee shutdown to delay some models

I correspond with a few manufacturers of HO trains and one of them today emailed me the following comment:

"Production in China is starting to roll - which is good news.  Bad news is my US supplier of couplers (Kadee) is shut down due to Coronavirus and won’t restart until sometime in May."

Troubles ordering from overseas?

Hey, open question for all.  Has anyone else experienced extreme delays (or not receiving anything at all) when ordering items from China?  I'm in the US, and have ordered a ton of small electronic stuff from China over the past couple years.  For me, the shipping time is (was) an acceptable tradeoff for the lower cost.  I just adjusted my expectations and planned ahead.  Things usually took two or three weeks to arrive, which I didn't think was unreasonable.

It's another week . . . post 'em if you got 'em.

Easily broken handrals on HO Scale Intermountain and Proto 200 tank cars

I have built several of each of the Intermountain 8,000 and 10,000 gallon ACF tank cars and the Proto 2000 old time tank cars.  They are great except for the handrails.

The handrails are plastic and are so fragile that I have broken the stanchions or the rail themselves.  I have replaced several with bent brass rod and eyebolts but this process is time consuming.

Anyone done anything different?

Adding mortar lines in Nscale.

I model in N scale and do a lot of scratchbuilding. One thing I have had very little experience with is adding mortar to brick walls. I am currently modeling an old station of the big four line. I want to paint the brick but I also wanted to add mortar lines to the structure. I have seen some info on this but it is always in larger scales. What technique(s) do you guys use? I mainly paint my buildings with inexpensive acrylic paints and have been very pleased with the results. Any info is greatly appreciated.

Stay Strong & Positive

Noticed another post, (now closed), about a disappointing cancellation.  Based on some of the “chime-in” I could tell some people’s moral and emotional state are really being put to the test right now.

Just wanted to encourage everyone to “try” and maintain a healthy attitude and remain strong.

Two things that have helped me.
