Modeling general discussion

Weekly Photo Fun - Mar 29 - Apr 4, 2020
It's another week . . . post 'em if you got 'em. There were several late-comers in last week's post. Check them out, then come back here afterward.
Micro Engineering code 83 changed...?
I ordered 30 pieces of Micro Engineering code 83 back in December and finally am getting around to using it. The last time I had bought it was 2 or 3 years ago. Unfortunately ME changed their tooling and the durometer of the plastic it seems.

03.27.20 - Part 1 Video - Installing Backdrop Base on the SoCal Desert Rail Division II

Too old or not to be too old ?
Because of so much free time, I have read a lot of threads these last days on the MRH site.
A very interesting stuff generally for the most.
But I have found many people are speaking about age, and this age is a way to limit future train project construction like other project
This is just my opinion;
I'm now 60 and just next from my 61 birthday date….
Woauw guy's believe me I have project for the next coming 200 years as a minimum !
Stimulus check for trains?
With the Trillion dollar stimulus package signed I was curious how many folks have plans to use some or part of the $1,200 most Americans will receive on hobby purchases...and if so what do you plan on purchasing?. I will use part of mine for trains and the rest will go into my never ending home remodel. I plan on getting some more Accurail kits as I purchased my first one recently (thanks Jim Six for all your articles on these great kits) and I love it, so more are in order for me.

Paint mixing.
I have been wanting something to shake well my model paints. Here is what I can up with and it works great...
General acrylic paint question
I’m using Vallejo acrylic paint with a brush for detail parts and touch ups. I had only used a light gray with a drop or 2 of their thinner, and was surprised at how smooth the finish was. Now I’m using black and blue mixed, and it’s not as smooth. Any tips on why that might be? Maybe more thinner?
Also, I noticed you really can’t sand it. Very fine sandpaper seems to just scrape it off. Any suggestions for that? Thanks.

03.24.20 - Week 5 - Working on my HO SoCal Desert Rail Div. Monster Railroad Layout Video
Well I skipped week 4 due to this pandemic crisis we are unfortunately going through right now and with my firefighter position meant that I had been at work a little bit more than normal so I was not able to invest much time into the Monster Railroad until just a few days ago. Now with social isolation in full effect I will have plenty of home time to do even more layout projects.
Spending your hobby dollars: manufacturer or retailer?
I just bought a model item online that was available from the manufacturer for x dollars, and from a major model railroad industry retailer for the same x dollars. There was a slight difference in shipping charges.
I made my decision but I'm not entirely comfortable with it. On one hand I can spread the dollars among more entities and support the retailer, on the other hand I can concentrate the cash on the guy making the stuff. Pros and cons either way.
