Richlawn RR gets a programming track

Initially I was going to use a track next to the fascia for programming; however, I put the track into use in the Klemptner Bros. salvage yard.  I decided to make a portable programming track that I will keep under my layout when not in use.  When I need to program I'll set it on my desk, hook up my SPROG 3, and use JRMI to do the programming.

So, what's with the color?  I used the equipment yellow because: 1.) It's easy to see; and 2.) It the only color of spray paint that I had that I won't be using on other items.

WOW decoders

Where is the lighting resisters that are on the mother board, the blue positive or on the white/yellow wire pads ? If I add ditch lights and use the + blue pad will I need to add resisters to the ditch light LEDs ?  Thanks for any reply's  TCS WDK-ATL-1       Zeke

BUILDING A MODEL RAILROAD - LAYOUT UPDATE #9 - How-To Create Landforms and Terrain

In this video we discuss and demonstrate various techniques used to create landforms, hills and terrain as it relates to model railroads and our current display layout. In our sidetracked segment we take a look at D-LOC's YouTube channel where you can find videos from various European train shows and meets. Lots of great modeling presented here.

An operations-oriented model railway in the year 1899

I found reference to this article somewhere online, I forget where. It's interesting to see the state of model railroading that far back. The trains are O gauge and the locos are clockwork.

I'll post a link to the complete PDF file, if I can find it ...

Can anyone ID the load on this Bulkhead Flat car?

I'm open to any suggestions. What is this load? For years (I took this picture in 1978) I assumed it was a load of ties. Now I realize it is not. I want to model it but would like some clue as to what it was.

71% (48 votes) for dry rails with a graphite  treatment or similar

19% (13 votes) for dry rails with nothing on them.

10% (7 votes) for some sort of conductive oil on them.

Here is the link to the original poll.

Viewing Distance

A recent post got me thinking.  We often refer to "viewing distance" as how far we appear to be from a given model.  Often we assume that we will be 2 to four feet from our models when we look at them.  In HO scale that is about 150 to 400 feet.  But I have to ask,is it really?   If you took a model an placed it 2 to 4 feet in front of you and lined up its prototype next to it in your view at what distance would you see them as the same size?

Oh Canada !

My wife and I are spending our 20th anniversary in Banff at the old CP hotel in December. I am looking for suggestions for any Hobby Shops in the area, AND real railroad interests. I am sure my wife will be spending a LOT of time at the spa...so I know I will have free time to pursue my hobby. Any suggestions, must see places, railroad hotspots ?

Thanks in advance !

Michael
