Modeling general discussion

Using the unusable in unique ways

With the Yuletide season coming, some of us may get model railroad stuff; I know I often do.  Sometimes, it's not especially useful, but someone's feelings will be hurt if you don't.  (Usually these come from kids who want to get something nice for Mommy, Daddy, Uncle/Aunt/whatever's trains.)

Wire Palm Tree - Tutorial

*UPDATE*

Hey all,

This is an update to this thread, I've now finished filming and editing the video and it's now up on YouTube.

I did end up making some changes as the experimentation progressed, mostly in the making of the leaves which is very time consuming but the results are pretty decent.

Piedmont pilgrimage, Atlanta GA layout tours

During the months of October and November there's  group that puts together a tour for the public to view private layouts in the Atlanta Georgia area, I am planning to go down ant see some of these layouts November 13 and was just curious if anyone here on the forums was planning on going also?

I am hoping seeing these layouts will help me in planing my own layout.

How to: Color materials for a scrap pile (or other uses)

If you've been following along with the progress on my Klemptner Bros salvage yard you will see that I've just installed the scrap metal pile.  Member Rick Reimer (ON30guy) asked how I colored the scrap so I thought that I would share my process.  I will say that I arrived at this process through experimentation so much of my scrap ended up being scrapped!

Here's a shot of the pile of scrap:

Your model railroad is true art

I think of model railroading as one of the most complex types of art installation.  Each one is a very personal expression. It is a moving sculpture. The audience sees only the surface but all the little hidden bits must operate perfectly for your expression to unfold.

Over criticizing ones self?

I was thinking about how at my age (turned 19 yesterday) I have already I am already on my forth layout. The others didn't get past track and a little start on scenery. On my last layout I redid the yard like three or four times.

Thinning Vallejo Model Air For Weathering

I attended Joe's presentation in Indianapolis and downloaded and read his acrylic painting guide.  I've gotten myself stopper bottles and mixed up Joe's High Performance Thinner.  I've had success airbrushing Vallejo Model Air straight from the bottle.

Now I'd like to do some weathering, a more transparent finish. Any suggestions on thinning Vallejo Model Air and air pressure to spray?  I'm using a Paashe Model H.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

What's up with the Exactrail website?

Keep getting error messages. There face book page is wonky too, at least for me anyway.

Weekly Photo Fun - October 28 - November 3 2016

I'm starting the thread this time so I can direct someone to it. Time to start this week's photo thread!

As always, we get as much out of your in-process photos as we do the highly polished "all done" shots!

Where are the HO scale feed trucks?

I can really use some feed trucks, especially from the 70's era (I model in and around 1980).  I consider this almost as important for those of us modeling grain elevators and feed mills as the Athearn 1968 grain trucks they produce.  How hard would it be to produce a feed truck using the Athearn chassis or someone else's chassis?  I thought someone did actually produce an HO scale feed truck at one time but can't remember by whom.  I don't think it's available anymore I believe.  Thanks!
