Modeling general discussion

Interesting switching idea

I was watching a video of a Marquette Rail train, and at one point they had to stop at an industry and shuffle around some tank cars without setting anything out or making any pickups. If you wanted to add interest without adding rolling stock to trains this would be a good way to do it.

When one micro camcorder isn't enough - UPDATED: Night vision video added

UPDATE - video sample of night vision added later in this thread

UPDATE - video sample added later in this thread

OK - I'm a gadget hound and I admit it.  If I already have TWO micro camcorders, why do I need a third?  I don't need it, but I wanted it - and at $21.00 why not splurge?  My new camcorder is really small - about half the size of my CUBE unit.

January 2017 issue cover sneak peek

Actor Michael Gross (who Ken Patterson interviewed in his Nov 2016 issue What's Neat column), is also the cover story of the Jan 2017 issue. He does a detailed step-by-step of his rolling stock weathering methods. From the cover photo you can see that Michael's a very capable prototype modeler.

Weekly Photo Fun - November 25th to December 1st, 2016

Awesome work everyone last week!  Time to start this week's photo thread!

As always, we get as much out of your in-process photos as we do the highly polished "all done" shots!

Track scale with gauntlet track

I bought a Boulder Creek track scale for the coal operation on my layout.  I was starting to think about installing it and I cant quite figure out how the weighting operation would work regarding the gauntlet track.  I understand the purpose to keep the engine off the scale but how do you weigh the car next to the engine?  The only was I can see is with an idler car similar to what is used to push cars onto a ferry.

Weathering Microscale graffiti decals:

This is not a tutorial—this is just what I did not knowing what else to do. So here's my resurrected N-scale RBOX first-attempt again (though there's too much acrylic paint still remaining—it was quite a struggle just to get this much it off!). To be faithful to the prototype, the model still requires more washes, but I skipped that step, eager to try out one of my new Microscale graffiti decals (I'm not nearly skilled enough to hand-draw my own).

Ghost Signs

I'm looking for tips on creating "ghost signs" on buildings. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Cornhill & Atherton - Arc Welding with the Arduino finite state machine

Enthused with the recent Arduino control of the staging yard, I decided to strike while the iron was hot and try another Arduino project. I'm not very good at learning stuff for the sake of learning (like C programming) without an end goal, so I needed an idea and an arc welding simulator fits the bill.

Welding simulators are common, but I after a quick study of 'prototype' arc welding, I realized there was more to the project than first appeared.

Berwick 7440/ Penn Central X77

Received this in an email from Exactrail:

We have in our portfolio of freight cars molds a car that, as of the this post, remains unannounced and unreleased.  This car presents a challenge for us.  We have the molds, but we lack a well developed data package for the creation in accurate paint schemes.

At this point, we feel like we need to broaden our search for data.

ExactRail is producing the Berwick 7440 Boxcar.  For Penn Central fans, this is the X77.
