Staying On Track
So, about a month ago, I got a Bachmann Spectrum "George Washington" set... and as much as I LOVE the set, the engine has been an endless heartache. It's a Heavy Mountain 4-8-2 with a Vandy tender (in case folks are unfamiliar with the set... I believe it came out in 2002?) and it's beautiful.
Traveling to western Oregon
Traveling in the western Oregon area next week, any suggestions on hobby shops or prototype railroad locations in that region would be appreciated.

Just a Sunny afternoon in Rockwood, Colorado on the D.R.& N. RR.

Ballasted track noise level - a very unscientific opinion
I've been ballasting track and have noticed an (expected) increase in the noise a train makes when traveling upon it. My layout is topped with 2" foam, has cork roadbed, and WS ballast affixed with diluted white glue. I'd say that the sound difference between my unballasted and ballasted track is about 30% louder after ballasting. Much has been shared about noise levels on this site and a search using the box in the upper right will return many postings.

Shoshoni Valley RR Comes Back to Life
It has been almost 2 1/2 years since I have had a MR. Tore down the last one when we put our old house up for sale because we needed to get a smaller one. A bit of modeling history.

Proper Perspective
Working on the benchwork for my S scale layout today I was thinking about how to handle the end of modeled run at Guild winery (the top left of the plan drawing).
