rail trails to inspire modeling
Picking up from recent thread called 'rails & cycling' , let's talk about rail trails that help generate ideas for modelling. North of Traverse City, Mich., there's a rail trail where the tracks once served a ferry. Vinyards and orchards are abundant on both sides. It's easy to imagine the train crew making an unauthorized lunch stop and stealing some fruit.

Pigeon Point
At the south end of the Delaware River Extension in Wilmington is the car float apron at Pigeon Point. The P&R/RDG floated cars across the Delaware River to chemical plants in Carney's Point and Thompson's Point in New Jersey. To simulate this I have a fold down shelf to hold the car float when it is docked. I have been putting this off for some time trying to figure out how to build it. Finally came up with a plan. The float was made from .040 plastic sheet and will hold six 36 ft cars or eight 30 ft cars. Construction of the float apron and
Silencing the gears... Brass steam DCC conversion.
Hi everyone,
I have successfully finished my first brass steam repower and DCC conversion on a 1960's Tenshodo Great Northern C-1 0-8-0. Everything works but I have a minor issue.
Log - Its Big, Its Heavy, Its Wood - How to model ?
I am contemplating building a small logging railroad. What is available to model the cut logs ? I see plenty on articles on how to build tress. But how do you model them once they are cut down ?

DCC install
Im FINALLY looking at doing my first sound install, yes i'm a procrastinator. What im planning on doing is using a Loksound decoder in a Athearn RTR SD40. I'm also planning on adding LED to it and somebodies current keeper. The few units that I currently have are ether factory or done by custom installs.
Now for the questions,
1. Ive seem some guys use what i'm going to call a motherboard that you plug in a decoder to, is there a benefit to this?
2. Loksound Select vs V4.0?
Murray River Bridge new layout construction end day 15.5 "bridging the gap" on a sectional layout.
As Murray River Bridge is a sectional layout, with each board being 5' 10" long and the bridge is 16' 8" I had to design a way of making sections of the bridge removable, yet being able to reliably maintain both an electrical contact and position of the track, I think I have cracked it using banana plugs and sockets.
The difference between model and prototype switching.
Looking over Dee's nice railroad and how he switched his industries I just remembered something I learned when training new conductor/engineers over the years using a small model railroad. As part of a "final" exam I would set up a short train of cars and ask the students to work together to switch a few industries put an outbound train together and take it to an interchange.

Interesting Logistics Warehouse Switching Track plan
Scouting around looking for inspiration for my next layout. I've found what I like is building/weathering freight cars and switching operations. Yesterday I was at our local hobby shop and saw a magazine I've never seen before called Cowcatcher Magazine, apparently geared towards mid-western and western railroads. There was a short article on a switching operation in Houston to the Genesis Worldwide Logistics warehouse off of Commerce Street. The warehouse is really a big one with eleven doors. You can find it on Google Maps by typing in the name.

Displaced is a Great Thing
Well we have absorbed some family displaced by Hurricane Harvey. The end result is my layout room has been re-purposed and it was a no-brainer. I still have the green light to build a layout, but smaller is the keyword here so I am now in the attic space with a total area of 8' x 8' for now. I am still trying to fall within the TOMA idea however I have had to move from a continuous running layout to a switching layout. There are no reversing loops or anything complicated other than a heck of a 4% grade to rise up from a lower level.
