Tight radius helix questions

As I design my newest model railroad I have decided that I would like an upper level that would depict a logging area. My problem is the real estate needed for a helix to get to the upper level. I only have room for an 18" to 20" radius for the helix. I realize that the tight radius also means a steeper climb. I plan on only running geared locomotives with log cars and maybe an occasional flat car or box car with supplies on the helix. Does anyone have any experience with a tight radius helix? Will it even work?

Scratch Building the Great Western Loveland Wet Hopper

The penultimate structure to be added to the model Great Western Loveland yard is the wet hopper used to unload beet cars, usually hopper cars or drop bottom gondolas.  Since there are no commercial HO model kits even remotely similar, I needed to challenge myself and scratch build it.  The comments below show the process and the current status.

I have owned & used lasers for more than 10 years. The business I was supplying closed. So now I can devote more into HO structures. I have completed quite a few, but sold them at swap meets, donated some to a local club, but now for myself.

No layout this time. This is something I wanted to do for quite awhile.

Visiting the Sipping & Switching Society @ Raleigh, NC (video links added)

As a modular model railroader, I've met a variety of model railroad groups over the years. Some groups are very open and friendly while others aren't. Just the nature of human interaction, I believe.

ProtoThrottle at Trainfest this weekend

For those attending Trainfest in Milwaukee this weekend, please stop by to demo Iowa Scaled Engineering’s ProtoThrottle. Michael Petersen and Nathan Holmes from Iowa Scaled will be on hand to show you how the ProtoThrottle can propel your diesel operations to the next level of realism.

Meet and talk with Michael and Nathan on Saturday at these times:

Switchlist Software Discussion

I'd like to get people's impressions and experiences with different types of switchlist software.  I have experimented with two different programs: Switchlist on the Macintosh, and JMRI on my PC.  Both are free, and have pros and cons, but as I haven't used them extensively, I'm looking for insights.  I have also considered Albion Software's Ship It!, but as that costs about $100, I haven't experimented much with it.

Order of diesel work (inside/outside)

I'm reviewing the order I'm doing my diesel work in. I have some diesels that are factory painted and will have some additional details added, some weathering, proper couplers, and DCC/Sound/Lights.

Should I get the electrical work out of the way first and then tackle the detail/weathering work? It seems when I have a completed model (like an older one I've done with details/paint/weathering) and then added DCC, some of the details get clobbered and need to be fixed.

I'm wondering if I should get the inside done first and then the outside.

A missed trip

A couple of days ago, I was helping a friend by driving a truck on a construction job.  It involved crossing a railroad track, the old CB&Q line from Alliance NE to Billings, MT and is part of the BNSF now.  This line is now primarily a coal route although once in a while they run a unit tank train, a solid auto rack train and even the famous "Plane Train", the one with the airplane bodies on their way to Boeing, runs on this route.  Sometimes we even get to see a manifest or loose car train.  Well, as I approached the crossing one time, I saw a train appro
