Model Railroad in a Bonus Room
Hello all. Quick question:
I'm soon moving to North Carolina and most of the houses that my wife and I have looked at renting have a fairly large bonus room. The open space of these rooms gets my model railroader senses tingling, but there's a problem: the "knee walls" that cove in to fit the contour of the roof.
Has anyone built a layout in a bonus room or attic and how did you overcome this?

Light pipes and LEDs
I have a Kato RS-1 and a Kato/Atlas GP7 which have TCS A4X decoders. I want to install LED lighting and could use some suggestions on how to tap into the light pipes.
Do I cut them back and drill a recess into the end to accept the LED? Can I drill a hole into the underside of the light pipe and insert the LED there? Should I paint the clear plastic pipe, and should I use black, silver, or something else? Having lighted number boards is not important.
Ho Scale Elevator
I'm working on a bookshelf layout that's 25 ft long and 8 ft wide (HO Scale). I was wondering if there was any truth about an elevator system that could raise and lower your train between levels. I was planning on putting my train yard on the second level and all my businesses on the first level. I don't have any room for a helix and I looked at a long incline but that too requires long distance to go up 14 inches. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Kalso Kits
Looking for feedback on Kalso kits. I like the look and the price is good. What is the quality of the drive and how easy does it go together ?
Thanks in advance

Query: authority of AMTRAK Police
Mid morning today on I-93 (Southeast Expressway Boston) traffic slowed just before the Milton exit to see what the flashing blue lights were all about.
Nothing unusual about that, except we were on the southbound side, outbound, and heavy traffic at that time is inbound.
As we crawled past, we saw no bodies, no crumpled sheet metal, just a guy in a red Ferrari coupe getting a ticket from an officer in an Amtrak police car.
Why would an AMTRAK police car be stopping and ticketing a vehicle on an interstate highway?

Rebuilding my Router software to suit me
As I have mentioned, I have been working on a software project to complete my Open University degree. This project was named 470Router - 470 after the code for the OU course - TM470 - and Router as it was intended to be used to create freight car routings for my model railroad. Well, I finished the degree (got a 2.2 and was awarded a B.Sc. Hons) and went off to do other things (mostly building some plastic scale model cars - Gentle Scale Modelling).

TOMA resources?
Is there a definitive place to get information about all things TOMA?
ie: A primer article or post that explains TOMA and give links to resources?
I see a lot of questions about starting a small manageable layout on other venues and it would be great to have a single place to point people to to get started with the concept.

The magic scenery dust
Hi! The surface texture, or structure is one important factor to get that "Wow-effect" from your creations.

Re-Decodering a Bachmann Steamer
After a month of operating sessions and doing a bit of scenery, I decided to get back into my left brain and attempt a steam decoder install. Actually, it's a REinstall where I removed all the electronics in a Bachmann steam loco and replaced them with a new Loksound decoder and iPhone speaker. It ended up nice, but the process wasn't without its pitfalls (let's just say that not all manufacturers follow the NMRA standard on wire color...). Details to follow . . .

Shorts on layout are confusing
I have this "N" scale layout that is giving me fits with shorts that should not be happening and looking for ideas for the cause of the shorts. Attached is a diagram of my layout. I use the NCE PowerCab DCC system.
All turnouts Atlas #7 with 5-Tortoise and 7-Hoffmann switch machines.
All the turnouts and switch machines work fine except #'s 8, 11 & 12. When I run a loco it always stops at any one of the three turnouts regardless of the way the turnouts are set. Any thoughts on why this would be? None of the other turnouts do this.
