Backdrop Sky and Fascia

I have studied too many layouts to count or to remember and I not seen many that both the sky and the fascis work to the best advantage of the layout.

What are metal wheels on scale model railcars made of?

This question came up in a discussion this weekend.

Could they be milled stainless (nonconducting) or steel, nickel silver plated brass or another silvery appearing metal?  They don’t seem to rust and are generally conductive (or we might hear some issues of “wipers” not working.)  Do different manufactures use different materials?

Thanks for your thoughts and knowledge.

Whisker Kadee's

Any negative comments on the whisker Kadee couplers. ?

I'm sold on them, and my future plans are to put these into as much of my rolling stock as possible.

Yes, I'm a newby!

I am so new to the model train industry, as far as internet. Some of the things I read here are way over my head, some of the things make perfect sense. Some of it is all too overwhelming. I know I love trains, I know I want to learn as much as I can from people with a heart to teach. My first question is coming. I presently own a Norfolk & Western Class J 611 Passenger train in HO. The space I have to work with, inside the boundaries of floor trim, is 10' x 6' x 4'. Can someone please tell me if this is adequate space for a "first" layout?

Former Time Saver Plus - Major Expansion

This was my latest creation based on the Time Saver switching puzzle plan in HO scale. It will now be expanded based on a 13 year old former(?) layout that has been stored in my son's garage!!!

I have had various train setups and layouts over the years, but never with scenery (or even ballast). After decades of armchair railroading, I am attempting to really build something worth having.

P2K Alco S-1 Switcher DCC

Okay, so, I just got a blue box Life Like Proto 2000 Alco S-1 switcher... and I thought to myself "Hey... I have a Digitrax sound decoder, factory speaker, and some LED bulbs, I'm going to put DCC into this DCC ready engine!"

The problem, is I have NO CLUE where I'm going to fit it. It looks like there is zero space between the top of the frame, and the top of the shell!

FEC RR in N Scale

Hello Folks,

Concentrate shed mockup

With the impending layout tour of the Hudson Bay Railway in May as part of the Railway Modellers Meet of BC I have realized I really should get back to working on the layout so visitors will have more than bare plywood and track to look at.  I decided I needed to mock up a concentrate unloading/thaw shed.

Scenery help! Dealing with dried matte medium splotches

Does anyone have any tips or suggestions on dealing with the white spots that show up in places after the matte medium solution dries?

I used a 50/50 solution of diluted matte medium and water, with a splash of 91% rubbing alcohol.  When it dried, I got white splotches in places on the ties and along the sides of the rails.
