"What's on your Workbench" December 2018 Edtion

Ok, it's December, let's see what's on your workbench for Santa Claus to put under the tree.

Steve, B&S RR ver. 2

Ok from what you gave me,  Your are building this in the 3rd bay of a 3 car garage.  Door to house on the right and another door and W/H will be on the south wall. The Garage door is on the left.  I looked at your plan with the "E" shaped bench work.  Not a good use of space, tight quarters etc.  So let start to build up a base idea and work from that point.

The stud wall that will form the main layout room will be built with 2x4 on 16" centers.

Watertower Finished... Finally

This week was a small point of celebration as I completed the CN enclosed watertower from Kanamodels that I have been working on intermittently for the last three years. Looked pretty simple, really. But the two part side panels and the need to taper the sides precisely to get the octagon to stick and adhere to the resin base and top was far more difficult and persnickety than I expected. In the end, I cut a center octagon out of blue foam to provide support and dug out behind the windows to provide a dark interior.

Upgrading HOn3 La Belle D&RG Coach

I told the story earlier of how I got this kit free from my LHS. What it needs is some new parts that are closer to today"s quality. The issue is that San Juan Model Co is not up and running yet. (new owners of Grandt Line) And Precision Scale also has new owners and they aren't up and running yet either. So who has HOn3 car parts, passenger and freight?

Eco/cork/foam Roadbed?

I saw this product in local big box store yesterday,...underlayment for laminate flooring, etc.

Cheaper than cork. Perhaps a replacement for cork roadbed?

Black & White - they aren't right! Paint it gray to save the day!

OK....sorry.....I couldn't resist the cute title!  I'm talking about colors for a model railroad in that I've seen some good modeling that could have been great if the coloring was a little different.  I'm specifically talking about using pure white or pure black colors instead of more muted shades of gray.  You see the problem is that unless something has very recently been painted black or white it will be a faded shade of black or white.  Pure black or white colors look too stark and unrealistic.

Let's see the bottom insides of your gondolas; I need idea.

My gondolas is just too clean. I have no idea how to to the bottom.
