power prices

well in trying to buy a replacement dc power supply, (my old unit is ???)  i can not believe the prices, for such a simple device.

just need a cheap one for working and testing some dc locos. as they have been in storage for a long time, so need to check them out and have proof they work right before trying to turn any of them them into dcc controlled units.

might as time allows check the second hand shops. (no reason to drop the coin ---aka dollars---) in fuel and time here.

Locomotive Service Pad

Finished up the locomotive servicing pad.

The Woodland Scenics kit was a real pain in the neck, the casting was really very poor and took a lot of work to clean up, also the fuel cranes were so very poorly cast that I couldn't get them straightened out enough to look acceptable let alone to clean the flash off of them as they are very delicate.

Replacement fuel cranes from Alexander Models were substituted and are much nicer in my opinion.

Identify and repair this old steam locomotive

I have this old HO steam locomotive which I am planning to use for static display. The screw that connects the cylinder, side rod and linkage is missing (highlighted in red). Does anyone know where to find a replacement? It would probably help if anyone can identify the make of the loco? I thought it might be a Mantua, but what I see the Mantua Mikados have a flat top on the trailing truck.

A Scratchbuilt On30 4-6-4T

I've just completed my latest build in On30, a 4-6-4 tank engine.  Here's a video outlining how I made it:

Poplar for benchwork?

I am building a series of 30" x 4 ft boxes for a new empty basement. Considering having Home Depot cut poplar to size (since it sells by the lf),  Any thoughts on poplar instead of pine? Ripping plywood not really in the picture.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Fixing Atlas Custom Line turnouts

Just ran across this interesting subject thread, with photos, of modifying Atlas custom line turnouts,...both shimming the frog flangeways and electrical bridging of those riveted rails.

ProtoThrottle Pocket!

Announcing the latest in a long line of holders for your ProtoThrottle...  the ProtoThrottle Pocket!

Store and protect your ProtoThrottle with the ProtoThrottle Pocket.  Made from strong and durable black PETG plastic, this holder will cradle your throttle securely and out of the way when not in use, while still providing access to the controls if needed.  Three mounting holes in the back make for easy attachment to a wall or the layout fascia.  $10 each, or $8 when you buy 5 or more.

Cork is down

Adding an update to my progress.

Got the majority of my roadbed down. All of my mainline, sidings, staging, and some spurs.

I started by sanding all of the shine off the foam and putting a light coat of brown interior paint on it. I hate the pink color and it helps me later on when I begin to carve the terrain. (The pink shows through so I know exactly where I am carving.)

Help needed for DCC install into older Proto 2000 GP18

I have gotten myself an older Proto 2000 GP18 low nose locomotive. I say older as the inner frame is a lot taller with any real type of pc board and or 8 pin type plug. I am a super noob novice for any kind of DCC install but I wanted to go with DCC and Sound for this locomotive. I have searched and my google-fu is lacking because I cannot find many sources for a full dcc and sound install on what I call the "older" weight/frame. Can anyone direct me to a source or instruct me on what or how to approach this install project.
