Magnetic uncoupler alternatives

So I just tried rare earth magnets under the track to try and activate my magnematic couplers. (N scale). The magnets seem to pull the coupler in the opposite direction needed to uncouple. Also the poles seem aligned along the long edges instead of the short edges. Anyone had any luck with this or am I barking up a wrong tree? Also, given that the under the track alternative micro-trains  sells for 10 bucks a pop seems excessive I would love to know what alternatives exist.

Replacement for Tam Valley Depot Fascia Controllers?

Just found out today that Duncan McRee, owner of Tam Valley Depot, has retired due to illness and their product line is going to be markedly reduced...  Very sorry to hear of Duncan's diagnosis, retirement, and business decision to reduce their product line.

What ever happened to Trevor Marshall's S scale layout.

I read the Trevor had to tear down his layout, but can't find any info on if he will be putting it back together or what happen to his rolling stock and motive power.

Wireless Lighting for Buildings

Hi All,

Does anyone have any experience with the AirBrite lighting systems or something similar?  Their solution appears to be geared towards the Christmas Village crowd but the idea of quickly deploying lighting without wires would speed up the detailing of my layout..  (Note, I am in no way associated with this vendor).

Best,

Mike Weber

Weathering an out of the paint shop Mikado

This Mikado has had its tender and cab repainted; the cab so new brass numerals could be applied, and the tender to have the herald placed correctly.

Deciding on command station & throttle

Hello Everyone.  I have started building my switching layout and have the shelf benchwork done and now working on the track I have started thinking more about what DCC system to buy.  For information, the layout is 9ft long x 16" wide.

I have a few questions but I would like to start with a question on the UWT-100 (and UWT-50) that i have been looking at regarding how the programmable buttons work.

Stripping Woodland Scenic's Figures paint...

I purchased a set of Woodland Scenic's firemen with an eye to stripping the paint off them and painting them in the more modern buff colored outfits.

91% Isopropyl Alcohol doesn't appear to much touch this stuff - a bit of the yellow striping is coming off, but the solid black remains quite attached to the figures.

Does anyone know what does work? Thanks!

Locomotive weight on switch point

Are there rules or any consideration given to stopping a locomotive on a switch? My internet search turned up a lot of info about models on switches (electrical issues!, derailment issues!) but no real answer to my question for the real thing. I've read that some switches have their own speed limits and I was curious about other limits we could simulate on our models.

In some cases on my layout, due to length of spur and cut of cars, the locomotive could end up stopped on a switch during the uncoupling.

Question about Lionel Rolling Stock Paint Scheme

I'm looking to see if anyone knows a way to be able to strip paint off of a modern Lionel Boxcar. Thank you in advance.
