SP SHASTA ROUTE LAYOUT TOUR
Hi Y'all
I decided to quit procrastinating and start a blog. I'll probably post mainly about my main interest which is modeling prototype freight cars, but for my first post I figured I would introduce myself and my layout.
About me: I live in the Nashville TN area. I have a lovely wife and son. I'm self-employed as a cabinetmaker. My other interests are deer hunting and bass tournaments. This is my fourth layout (second layout that wasn't sectional track on a sheet of plywood).
Research: The Modern Era combined with Now You see it, Now you Don't!
I just had a rather sobering moment.
One of my favorite industires in Arizona railroading is the cottonseed mill. The Cotton idustry is primarily interested in the cotton ball fiber, even though each ball also contains seeds. As a result, the cotton gin is used to separate the valuable fibers form the unwanted seeds. The seeds were then at one point regarded waste.

Weathered Track Colors
Joe - I posted this on your Siskiyou Web site, but thought I might as well post it here as well -
"Joe - backing up considerably to info you provided some time ago about coloring/weathering track -
You said you used PolyScale Roof Brown to color the sides of main line tracks. Yet in the photos you show, the main line seems to have a gray appearance, not brown.
Is this due to the way computers "interpret" colors or does the main line track have a gray appearance?"
Using MicroEngineering N-Scale Insulated Rail Joiners
I am having great difficulty using MicroEngineering N-Scale Code 55 insulated rail joiners. They do not have slots that will attach to the bottom of the rail. They just slip on and fall off just as easily. Is there a trick to using these things that I'm missing? Maybe a little CA would be the answer? Any suggestions are most welcome.

Matthews Freight Yard
This is a picture of the Matthews Yard as it exists today on my layout. The picture was taken by my friend, Bob Wheeler. I built the yard as a "newbee" and made some serious mistakes including putting 6 of the 9 tracks at the back of the yard instead of the front. The good news is that the yard section (30" wide by 13-1/2' long) is built as a section. I can build a new yard section outside of my train room and switch it out in a few hours. I'll probably use the buildings over.

Advice on benchwork construction
Hi all,
I'm after some advice on benchwork design for a multi deck layout. I have read "designing benchwork for multi deck layouts" and this has provided me with some very valuable information to date. However I'm looking at having a 24" (600mm) overhanging deck for the majority of the layout. There are sections that may be upto a metre (39") and this is why I'm seeking help.
Welcome to Dana's Birthday Party
Naturally I did go there to run my newly painted F3's, which now have a proper paint job, none that "east of the Mississippi", stuff.
Looking for plans
Pretty much new to the model railroading experience, I have become facinated with making my own structures. I started out using balsa wood, then switched to styrene, but am having trouble finding plans for structures and have had to pretty much design my own structures from pictures etc.....
Are there plans out there for yard buildings, houses, gateman towers or switching towers, etc. that are available on the web that I can download? I model in N-Scale, but could convert HO plans if that is all there are. Thanks.

Need advice on ties and spikes for HO scale
Hi,
I am going to be slapping down some HO track pretty soon. I want to order some supplies to get me going.
My plan is to work with code 70 mainline and code 55 for everything else. Even these small sizes are a bit of a comprimise. I will be making up a code 55 test track and running some of my friends stuff on it to see if I have problems. I know I will be relying heavily on the Bachman Spectrum 4-4-0 and 4-6-0 for my roster so those will have to clear the spike heads..
On to the questions..

Turtle Railroading...
I've been practicing "turtle railroading" lately - slow but steady is getting quite a bit accomplished. In the last few weeks I've done the following:
1. Completed a new swing bridge across the entrance aisle to the layout:
(early photo - roadbed for the siding is being glued down with AZ Rock & Mineral ballast as weights)
