Have lots of HO & Lionel parts - how to get from what I have to a 'nice' layout

I have a new house with a large basement, approx 20' x 25' available for trains.

Want (eventual dream layout)

- an On30 proto-freelance railroad that interchanges with an O gauge Delaware & Hudson railroad, circa 1900

- a way to slowly design and build the above layout

Currently Have

- A large amount of HO gauge, code 100, Athearn snap-track, and probably 50 miscellaneous HO gauge rolling stock (almost all Athearn blue-box, with plastic couplers).

Switch List Templates

Hi All-

I'm getting ready to host my first op session next week and I would like to have blank switchilsts on hand for my operators to use should they want them.  I'm using a CC/WB system as a primary car forwarding system but I'd like to have something on hand should someone want to "take notes".

I could whip something up in word or excel in a pinch but if someone has something already done and is willing to share I'd be grateful.  It would be one less thing I need to run around and take care of before next week.

Thanks in advance!

Another death of our hobby thread/comment

Here you go.

I have read discussions on what can be done to promote the hobby of model railroading. Personally I think this is a little silly. This hobby sells itself. And what a seller it is. But....

Shelby Station and Crew Change

On the station track as Shelby there is about 6 inches to the wall.  The backdrop creates depth to the scene and a natural transition from the layout to the horizon.  The station is a walthers kit and there are 32 (little people) LPs from Preiser and Woodland Scenic.  You can see some VIA cars on the storage track.  They are from Rapido.

New SD40 for the LVN

Built from a Kato SD40.  It was originaly painted for CN.  Added scratch built sunshades and snow shields as well as detail parts such as horns, winterizaton hatch, rerailer, radio antennas, ditch lights.  The decals came from S scale and G scale CDS letters for Central Vermont Box cars.

Progress report on Genesis DDA40X (with photos)

Click photos for larger versions

Here is an early look at preliminary test samples of the new HO scale EMD DDA40X under development by Athearn. The toolmakers still have some final work to do on this monster (more than 14-inches long) but the final version promises to be an impressive and powerful model.

RIP Carl Arendt

I regret to have to inform you all of the death of Carl Arendt, well-known modeller and advocate for small and Micro layouts. His popular website, Micro/Small Layouts for Model Railroads, contained articles, photos, and plans for layouts in small spaces.

Start of some scenery

It's been a while since I posted any pictures so I thought that I would post a couple of some recent scenery addition. These are a couple of shots of the early scenery progress in the town of Brookside.

DCC Choices

Along with trackwork, one of the things to consider early is a choice of power from the many options out there. I'd like to hear from advocates of any system and any "cons" about DCC choices. My concerns are:
