My uninvited Guest...

So I've been wondering why my layout has been smelling a little gamey the last day or so and noticed it was in the vicinity of some of the track I recently ballasted.  I'd been suspicious that is was something in the ballast I recently put down by my transload facility but coudln't put my finger on what could be causing it.

Model railroading circa 1929...

Just found this pic of a 1929 model railroad:

Track Ballast

Hi Jack from Star, Idaho.  A week or so ago I posted a blog about dying ballast.  I appreciate the advice to try Scenic Express.  I have purchased from scenic express before but I never looked close at the actual stone ballast they sell.  I only looked at the first page because I thought it was for the larger scale trains.  However, to my surprise they make it for HO and N scale.  Thanks again for leading me to the right place because I found the dark grey ballast that I was looking for.  I received it today and the color was perfect.&

Blog Facelift

The MRH blog option is nice because true to their motto it's forever free. But if you have a domain name and a host it is really hard to beat WordPress for functionality. I gave my blog site a much needed facelift today. As easy as installing a new theme and a little tinkering with it to get a brand new look for the home of the LK&O Railroad.

Check it out!

What Keeps You From Actually Starting A Layout?

Ok, I know why I haven't started building a layout yet, but I would like to know from those others out there who are part of the hobby, but haven't started working on their own layout, why not.

Taking It to the Next Level

Hi All,

I’ve posted on this forum a few times with tips on various techniques I’ve developed while building my new layout.  The layout is based on the Great Western Railway in Northern Colorado which served the sugar beet industry in the area. The GWR was started in 1901 and still exists today even though the sugar beet industry is gone.  I’m modeling the late 1950s when sugar beet processing was still a big business. Both steam and diesel locomotives were in use then.

Controlling Sound Modules

Besides installing sound decoders in my engines, I also like other sounds on the layout: church bells, industrial whistles, coal breaker conveyor, running streams, crossing bells, etc. With the exception of the crossing bells, I have all of the sound modules activated by an on/off switch. I’ve been looking for some type of random timer or generator to activate them.  I contacted a couple of electronics manufacturers, but they couldn't help.  Some of you may be interested in what I found out.

Some scenery work on the Donner Summit

I worked on one of the signature scenes of the layout Long Ravine.  This is where the Southern Pacific crossed over the Nevada County Narrow Gauge below.  A lot of prototype photos were taken here.  My scene is compressed quite a bit relative to the real one but I tried to get the flavor.  In this picture, my largest locomotive an AC-12 Cab Forward  (HO scale) is passing over my smallest NCNGRR #9 (HOn3).

Building my shelf layout(s)

It is time for me to update this introduction. In fact it is way past time! (today is November 10, 2020) I am now starting on my third shelf layout. The first was meant to be a "chainsaw" layout. A place to experiment and learn but not last long. It was around for nine years. Before The end of that time I started another layout. This time it was more of a prototype layout. It was based on the Santa Fe McPherson (Kansas) branch. The four 6'x18" sections of that layout will hopefully be incorporated into a new bedroom sized layout.
