The best train shop in the South!

[First & foremost, I am not affiliated with Trainmasters nor did they ask me to do this posting.  It's just such a great place I wanted to share my experience.]

Thinning craft paint for airbrush spraying

How thin is thin enough?  No, I'm not talking about body weight!  I want to thin some cheap hobby paint for my airbrush to spray the backdrop in the alcove area.  I've heard thin the paint were it's about like milk, but are they talking skim, 1%, 2%, or whole milk?  I use the cheap Apple Barrel paints that are about $1.00 per bottle, and no I don't want to upgrade to the good stuff because I've got a very large area to cover.  Do you thin with just water, or add alcohol?

Manual Turnout Control - Part 2

In my previous post I had asked your opinion on how to control my turnouts manually and I thank everyone for their input and ideas.  After looking at all the information I'm going to attempt (notice the word attempt) to use a 2 postion SPDT rotary switch as the actuator.  The switch will be mounted in the fascia (probably flush) and will use the same method as Joe Fugate uses with his barrel locks to connect to and control his turnout.

rolling stock boxes

I am just wondering if people save their rolling stock boxes. I have 374 pieces on the layout and I think I should throw out the boxes. Can anyone offer a reason not to?

Easy Model Railroad Inventory How to Design a Complicated Query

I had completed my timetable and was selecting the cars for each train. Selecting the cars is simple.

Click the Add button to the right of the Assigned Cars tab to view a list of all of the cars that fit the requirements.

Before a car will be displayed for selection it must meet very specific criteria.

1. Service type not a locomotive,

2. The car cannot be assigned to another train,

Floquil Marker pens

Hi Jack from Star, Idaho.  I have a question about the Floquil Marker Pens in the track colors.  I use the Atlas code 83 track and is there some prep that has to be done to the track before the paint will adhere to the rail when I use the rust color for weathering?  When I apply it I really cannot see that there is any change in the rail color.  What am I doing wrong?

Praire (2-6-2) - Georgia branchline?

Found an old Tyco Praire kit cheap.  I have started the construction, which, as with all my locomotives, will end up with some heavy detailing and kitbashing.  To start with, the short Tyco cab has to go, replaced by a modified Roundhouse 0-6-0 cab.  The generator will move back, the boiler front will be replaced, and the bell mounted on the front, over the headlight on a headlight bracket. The injectors will be brass and starter valves will be added, as will be cab and tender railings, airlines, sand lines, and a coal pusher in the tender.

Walthers Turnout degree profile question

I'm planning on doing a crossing much like Bryon did in his article and need some information on Walthers turnouts.  I specifically need to know the degree of diverging track for their #4, #6, and #8 turnouts.  By this I mean is the diverging track on a #6 30%, or 25% or what?

Does anyone know this information or where I can get it?  Thanks!

Rick
