Photography class -- Photography with class ...

Over on another thread,  JL&T Railroad Blog - Trackside Photos...

Jas posted some pretty nice photos of his module. The voices of the forum agree, these are pretty nice work.

steel mill scale house

Does anybody have any idea's on building a scale house for a steel mill that weight's iron ladle's?

magnets on rubber brake hoses

This follows an earlier thread on increasing operating realism on switching layouts with a small inventory of rolling stock.

Has anyone contemplated the addition of micromagnets to the end of rubber brake lines on rollingstock so that they can be connected and disconnected realistically?

It would mean that each car could only be connected in one direction but this would not be significant on a layout without a turnback loop.

Searching

Has anyone information on either purchasing or making "flags" for engines and crummys (white for extras and green for followingsection) and attaching them?

Second search is for a pair of "elephant ears" either purchase or instructions on making them - I have a Mikado that the NKP used for passenger service and would like to detail it correctly.

Thanks.

Take a Model Train to Work Day

So tomorrow is "Take a Model Train to Work Day," as decreed by the folks at World's Greatest Hobby. Do you have any plans of taking a train to work, and if so, what and how?

Easy Model Railroad Inventory Clinic

Will be giving a clinic on Easy Model Railroad Inventory this Saturday at the Virginia Beach Library hosted by the NMRA Tidewater Division.

A little nervous, when I started to prepare I really didn't know where to start. so I printed the user manual thinking the table of contents would be a good outline.

The manual is 191 pages long. I think I will focus on the basic functions used in all areas of the program. Then I will let the Q & A drill down to the details.

Progress!!

The Greater Nickel Plate Lives! Trackwork is completed. Wiring and testing will be started next week with the Golden Spike ceremony still scheduled for the end of the month. After that, ballast, painting, uncoupling ramps, scenery and small details will take place over the next year or two. My railroad is coming together after being in boxes and crates for nearly 30 years! Woo! Woo!

Here are a few photos to share:

thoughts on on-board sound

I don't want to hi-jack this thread, but it would help me a lot to hear from others about their experience with on board sound.   I know that likes and dislikes are very subjective, but I  really don't want to spend the extra money now to get steam engine sounds that I won't like.

Slow going on the corner

Am I the only one that encounters this problem? - It seems the closer that I get to completion on something the slower going it gets and feels like it will take forever to finish!  Case in point:  I'm about 95% complete on the alcove corner section that contains Buck & Loretta's trailer house and the last 5% seems to be taking FOREVER!

I've added a dark gray mask to the picture below to help block out the background.  I'm now adding trees, bushes, telephone poles (with wires) and final details.
