F units, Athearn vs. Bachmann

A friend of mine has been trying to figure out how it would look to combine Athearn and Bachmann F units in the same consist.  Now that I have one of both, I took some pictures and thought it might be useful to somebody else out there.

The green Southern unit is a stock Athearn RTR model, while the black NS unit is a stock Bachmann Silver Series model.  They could both use modifications to the rear couplers, but overall I think they are fairly similar.  The roof profiles might be very slightly different, but not enough to show in most cases.

NMRA Photo Collection

Hi Guys,

If you were not aware of it, the NMRA photo collection is now available online http://archive.nmra.org/Photographs.aspx?c=118 to both members and non-members (who can also order photo downloads at a slightly higher fee).  I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at the scope of the collection and the ease in using it.

Starting a Timetable for the 8th Sub

I've been drafting a timetable for the rapidly approaching start of formal operations on the layout.  The following posts show some images of how it's shaping up.  Formatting, wording and so on are copied from prototype WP timetables wherever practical.  So far I'm working with a very abbreviated amount of information, four pages plus the inside and outside covers.

DCC and CMRI integration

Over the years (gee, we can now say that, here!) there have been discussions on this forum, and others also, regarding layout wiring issues: where the problems lie, where are "best-practices", gremlins, etc.    And, we have been pointed to some excellent sources of accurate information, such as the various Yahoo groups, and some notable individual's forums.

To Joe - Paint brand for painting ties?

Hello Joe,

I wonder what paint (brand and color) did you use for the ties? In your video you mention only for the rails.

Thank you,

Jure Sporn

Building the Employee Timetable

Once all the planning has been done and the meets and conflicts resolved, it's time to build the employee timetable (ETT) page  that  the crews will use.  I have a separate worksheet for the ETT to make sure I don’t “damage” the formulas on the planning worksheet.

Zip texturing

Hi all,

Building a layout can take some time, and mine is no exception. There are a few smaller areas however on which I'm now ready to build the base scenery. In the past I have downloaded Joe Fugate's Ten Mile Creek series which I've found really helpful (I can recommend this series to anyone).

DCC block wiring

Just starting the wiring on my layout. The layout has four bus runs of 15 to 20 feet in a radial or star pattern originating from a terminal barrier strip that is connected to my command system with a single pair of wires. I want to break up the layout into four power subdistricts and use seperate circuit breakers for each subdistrict. Do the power subdistricts have to coincide with the bus runs or can they go across or straddle two areas powered by two seperate bus runs? Using NCE Powercab without a smart booster right now but will be adding a smart booster after a while.

Alcove Expansion - Remote staging pass through tunnel construction (continued) - rock coloring

In my last posting http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/6710 I had gotten to the point of starting to finish and install the tunnel portal.  This posting shows the latest work in that area.

Here the portal is just sitting in place for a test fit after adding paint & grass.

detection

I do not know the proper name for this type of track detection but it uses a track feed wire passing through a coil of wire and it senses the flow and thus reacts. Does anyone know where this type of system may be purchased or do you have any plans of the circuit?

Thanks Don
