What's your technique for drilling holes?

Hey everyone,

This is a general inquiry about successful techniques for drilling hundreds of those #78-#80 sized holes for grab irons or other tiny details. What do you use to accomplish this other than a pin vise?

The thought that has crossed my mind is to use one of those cordless screw drivers with a micro chuck or a slow speed model drill press. Both of these options are fairly costly. Of course, so are broken drill bits. So, any good ideas to preserve the wallet and personal sanity are appreciated.

Anyone using CTs for occupancy detection?

I have installed a dozen blocks using current transducers (CT) to sense presence of an engine (or lighted car) in a block. I use DCC. The circuits were designed by Bill Hudson (see hudsontelcom.com). Some of my signal heads work fine. Some are showing a double indication, ie, the clear signal (green) stays lit. I can't figure out what's causing the problem even with Bill's guidance by emails. All the circuit boards work correctly if I install them in a block where a signal head works properly.

Life Like GP38 coupler replacement

I have a couple OLD Life Like GP38's laying around that I'm thinking about stripping down and rebuilding.  These are the old toy train engines with the truck mounted couplers and open pilots.  My question is this, what is the best way to mount KD coupler boxes into the shell after I fill in the pilots with styrene?

Bachmann Locomotive Gears, N Scale

Something is terribly wrong with the gears in Bachmann's N scale locomotives.  After a few hours of running, the wheel gears split down the entire length of the shaft.  These gears feature a hollow press-fit feature for the wheel axles; this permits the wheels to be electrically isolated from each other.  When the shaft splits, two of the gear's teeth are split and cause jamming to the drive gear.  Further, the wheels' axles no longer fit correctly.

Linka molds

For anybody out there          Has anybody out there ever used linka molds for casting their own buildings?

I came across their web site and found it quite interesting. I was wondering

Vermiculite

Joe, or anyone who has done so, do you still mix vermiculite with plaster when you plan on carving rocks?

Thanks,

Micro Kristal Klear

Hi all,

I want to glaze some small windows on MOW equipment. I have some Micro Kristal Klear that has gotten thick. Would anyone know of an appropriate thinner?

Thanks for any advice.

Unable to program or reset a Digitrax decoder!

Just installed a Digitrax DN163 decoder in a Walthers GP-9m.  Before i put it all together, I tested it using the factory default settings.  Locomotive ran good fwd and rev.  Changed start voltage to a value of 25. Started to move at speed step 1.  NDOT was reversed.  Engine ran backward in FWD.  (wires are correctly installed)  Using Digitrax's decoder manual it says to program CV 29 to a value of 39 (4 digit address, analog operation,28/128 speed steps). Now the engine will not move at all in either direction.
