Help using one engine with Cab04P/Powercab
I’m pretty new to DCC – and while I like the NCE system, I’m not particularly fond of the large hammerhead handheld controller and the long flat cable that must be used. I want to use a Cab04p along with my Powercab. I like the rotary knob and compactness of the 04 engineer cab.
Problem is I currently use one engine (Athearn MP15AC). I was planning to tuck the Powercab and PCP under the layout and install a UTP where the PCP was to allow simple disconnecting of the 04p when not in use.
How to Build a Manual Turntable
Here's a "How To" on how I built a custom N scale 8" manual turntable.
I posted this as part of my Free-moN Staging Yard construction thread, but thought it'd be good to establish as its own thread for comments, search and archiving purposes.
Building a Model Railroad for under $500
Hello, my name is Justin Miller and I have been a Model Railroader for about 4 years, I have built a 13'X18" shelf layout in my bedroom, but I have been wanting to have a smaller layout with the ability for a continuous run.
I have taken up the challenge to build a complete Layout for under $500, As a college student, this will be about all I could afford for a layout anyway. Here is the track-plan for the layout:
Quiet roadbed vs. sound equipped locos. . .
Back in the "old days", there were many articles in the mrr press describing different roadbed construction methods which would produce superior sound deadening qualities. Now, with sound locos, many layouts have become very noisy and create a much more dynamic experience for the model railroader.
It seems to me that going back to having noisy roadbed would be the way to go to complement sound locos and ad a sense of additional reality to our layouts.
What are all your thoughts?

Modular Display Benchwork
I'm working through the design of the benchwork for my modular chainsaw. The goal is to build a free-standing modular layout around the perimeter of my basement. I wanted to try to incorporate all the best practices I have seen and read about. I threw this together quickly in sketch-up tonight.

COMPLETED - MRH Forum Challenge - Bridge Scene
I challenged myself to make some progress finishing a scene. I now have quite a bit of scenery complete only to the point where the plaster is in and painted, but it will be nice to get someplace DONE or at least much closer to it.
I thought of finishing the area around two bridges on my mainline, which would also require completing a fairly sizable portion of the backdrop. I decided instead to work on two trestles in the bottom of Cedar Creek canyon, which will require 3-D scenery only.
Here's the location:

Getting started with $500 MRH contest
MRH will be debuting a contest in the August issue: Getting started in the hobby with $500. What would you do - how far can you get on $500? You don't actually need to spend the money (we won't stop you if you want to), but you need to at least lay out a plausible shopping list and design for what you would build.
More details to follow on this thread and in the August issue of MRH.
