Ore car assembly line progress
A couple of weeks ago, I noted on here that I was documenting my assembly line construction of a fleet of ore cars on my blog. I've made more progress on the cars since then. The fleet of 16 cars is currently sitting in the paint shop awaiting a coat of primer so that I can assess the quality of some seams and corners. The cars are nowhere near ready for final paint, but I've done quite a bit of work on them. I've posted the details there.

Operating Switch Stands
I've read and re-read Woflgang's great article in the Jan-Feb 2010 MRH on operating switch stands. I really like the idea, and I wanted to see if I could get it to work with my Fast Tracks turnouts.
Instead of brass plate, I simply bent the rod, and inserted it into a hole on the throwbar. For just testing purposes, I mounted the stand sideways.
And here's the results.

Back and forth on trackplan APU Spur ARR
First of all thanks for all the blog traffic from MRH. Second, David K. Smith from Railwire and NZT Products has been helping me with my track plan. HO 2x14' now, Code 83, #4/5 T/outs. Tough to make it all fit. Catch all the action on the blog. You can't have your cake and eat it too on most plans, especially shelf switching layout.

Remote Uncoupling
Having been one of the advocates against remote uncoupling because of the electrical parts used that was posted by the original poster, I'm wondering if it would be right to approach this subject again.
I started thinking about the whole subject and wondered if it could be miniaturized to fit in the center beam of a flat car or tank car. The way I see it two components need to be miniaturized for it to fit into the center beam of a car, the electronics and the motor or similar device to pull on the coupler.
Down At The Crossing - Part Dos
I finished up the crossing at Meredith Drive on my IAIS Grimes Line layout. Meredith is the only grade crossing that features gates on the prototype so I wanted to include all the bells and whistles. The crossing uses Tomar gates and flashers controlled by a Logic Rail Technology Grade Crossing Pro circuit. The gates are powered with a Tortoise switch motor and two Circuitron Remote Signal Activators. An ITT sound module provides the crossing bell.

An idea for painted clapboard siding
I saw this photo on another forum, and had one of those lightbulb moments:

Rapido FP9 Finally Arrived!!
In my apparent continuation of free advertising/promotion for Rapido products, I thought I'd post some pictures of my newest acquisition. Yesterday finally saw the arrival of my Rapido VIA Rail FP9's from Dallas Model Works that had been originally ordered back in 2009/2010. After pulling them out of the shipping container, I got out the camera and took some photos as I opened them.
Documenting the wiring of the layout.
When I was a member of the Abington Lines Model Railroad Club a LONG time ago, the member that was in charge of the wiring was an EE. As such we had very good documentation of where each and every wire went and what it did. He did this with a combination of a spreadsheet and software that produced a wiring schematic. I was wonfering if anybody does this and what software they use?

Using Spline Roadbed in Helix - Part 4 - Progress Update
Since my last post, I've had an issue with the min-split HVAC not cooling properly over the 12 straight days of 100+ degrees. I had to rearrange the room to give the technicians full access to the inside unit of the mini-split. Now the helix is temporarily in the middle of the room which does make it much easier to work on and test. Although, I did try to solder one of my fingers to the track this past week. Added info & pics on 31 August below.
