Building a GE 85 ton steeple cab

Back a few years ago I started to scratch build a GE 85 ton steeple cab based on the two Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting had the 60 or more Utah copper owned. I finished it about a year ago as a non operational locomotive in a HO scale diorama.
Over the past year I have been designing HO cars in 3D and printing them though Shapeways.com.
The Atlas HH600/660 has a slightly larger bolster to bolster dimension than the actual 85 ton steeple cab but is a good platform for it.
After designing the cab and trucks I have started the locomotive with the plans of making two.

Dullcote Brush or Spray?

I have been repainting some Box Cars in gloss enamel and applying new decals from Microscale. Plan is now to apply some Testors Dullcote to protect the Decals and remove the shine.  Having never used the product (Dullcote) before, I am seeking opinions on whether it is better to apply it by spray or brush.  I can happily use either technique.  I would also like to know if Nitrocellulose Laquer thinners are suitable to use with Dullcote.

Thanks for your help

Ritter Lumber Trains on the Apple Valley

My assignment for the April Operating Session on the Apple Valley Model Railroad was the two Ritter Lumber Company trains.

On the layout’s upper level, the Carolina and Northwestern runs from Hickory Yard to Mortimer Interchange. The Ritter Lumber company operates from Mortimer to Spruce Pine and then the two logging camps, Camp 7 and Camp 12.

The normal power is geared steam locomotives, however they were all misbehaving so Southern Railway Alco RS1 #405 filled in.

Reviving My Layout

I had posted in my blog that I had constructed a layout as presented in MRR Magazine many years ago. Due to the recent basement flood, I was forced to clean out the spare room where everything was stored and am now starting to reassemble the layout. Here is what the layout looks like. Overall size is 14ft. x 4ft. Track plan drawn with SCARM.

TCS WowSound - I'm excited

Okay, I can't be the only one who's recieved an e-mail from TCS with the link to their new product video.  Looks exciting.  I'll be curious to see how it competes/compares with the Tsunami and LokSound (roughly comparable price & size, from the look of things).

Kadee coupler for those super-tight spots?

If you've ever tried to mount a Kadee coupler on the front of a steam locomotive, or on the rear of an F-unit, or in any of a number of other tight spots, you know it's sometimes impossible to fit the coupler and box in there and keep something close to a prototypical coupling distance.  Usually, that means the coupler sticks out too far, or you have to resort to drastic measures like cutting off the rear of the coupler shank and drilling a new hole in the remaining shank stub.

But maybe there's a better way?
