Nice Project

The installed mill looks wonderful. I love the backdrop photos that extend the scene. Weathering on the mill really  makes it standout.

Blast furnace

In looking at your blast furnace I was noticing the top works of the structure and wondered if that is the stock kit or the kit with the peach tree shops older top works or something different entirely. The model looks great. I have two kits to build and was wondering if you are familiar with the Sloss-Sheffield furnaces? If I recall that is a structure that is very close to the scale size of the walthers kits however that particular furnace is constructed with 2 furnaces butted against each other with the stoves adjacent to each other and the cast houses on the ends of the assembly. If you happen to have Model Railroaders Guide to Steel Mills by Bernard Kempinski, a picture of the mill is on page 56. Since you have assembled the kit and obviously done a fantastic job do you think it could be assembled in a mirror reverse with out the need to redesign everything or would you think it would turn into a scartch-building project with the kit as a source of parts?

Great job on your models, the client made a wise choice in retaining your services.

Blast Furnace

This is a stock Walters' kit. I built it just as the kit comes. Since I am not knowable in the steel mill industry I really can't answer your questions. I just built all of the structures in these photos just as they came in the kits.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Hi, Rob
I don't know if this will help you but I have been buying detail parts from this fellow:   https://steelmillmodelerssupply.com/

I see that one of his recent offerings is a mirror image cast house floor and I'll bet he has other details to help with modeling a Sloss-Sheffield furnace. I built my original Walthers blast furnace back in 1997 but I have recently been adding details to it post construction, as best I can, just to 'spice it up' a bit.

Good Luck, Ed

If you do decide to order from him allow plenty of time to get the order filled. I believe the proprietor is in a military reserve unit and sometimes can't get to his side-job right away. His 3D prints are very well done and in a good material to work with. His 'flange rings' for the Walthers downcomer pipes are a very handy detail item to help hide the joints between the sections of piping coming down from the top of the blast furnace.

I think I've already bought about $350 worth of detail parts to jazz up a Walthers kit that I think I originally paid about $75 for! Welcome to Model Railroading 😆
