Fox Valley N Scale

Hey everyone, I was wondering if anybody is running Fox Valley diesel locos on their N scale pikes? I am looking to buy some new motive power in the near future and while I love Kato I am always open to different manufacturers. Basically I want to know if Fox Valley runs more like a Bachmann or a Kato. What is the level of detail also. Thanks

Richlawn RR V2 - Elbow & Armpit - determining benchwork height

A small but necessary step - determining my ideal bench work height.  This week I was on vacation so I was able to get my workbench on (locking) casters so I could use my 50 year old Dewalt(tm) radial arm saw to start cutting bench work.

Atlantic Coast Line / Charleston & Western Carolina Headlight Arrangement

I have what I hope is a simple question.

I've noticed that the Charleston & Western Carolina (C&WC) locomotives (F7 & GP7) follow parent ACL when it comes to headlight arrangement. The lower light housing is the low and high beam headlights. The upper housing has what appears to be a red Gyralight (commonly used by ACL) and another white light above that (see attached picture of Athearn unit I found).

How was this upper set of lights used?  Red Gyra in reverse, or for forward?  What did the white light above it do?

Converting from steam to diesel

No, I'm not changing eras, nor am I giving up on my steam locos.  I just saw this and found it fascinating and unusual..

I've seen a few geared steam locos which were converted to internal combustion at some point in their lives.  Mechanically, the conversion isn't that complex - just connect the output shaft from the transmission to the drive shaft of the locomotive, and off you go.  Here's a Shay, for example:

Jim Six's Blogs

Did I see a post from Joe recently that stated that he would be restoring Jim's deleted blogs?  Joe, if that is so, any idea when they will be resurrected?

I have been at track level there.  It is in very bad shape on the lower level.  The AMTRAK station is next to the depot.

BNSF FALL RIVER DIVISION

For the total approach to a model railroad this is one of the best in the US. This RR in set in the modern era and it's operations come as close as you can get to the real thing.  Lessons to be learned for this layout are endless. Three Parts.

Weathering boxcars

Weathering the rolling stock is a must - the plastic look of cars just coming out-of-the-box ruins every illusion.
