Trackwork

Turning a corner / Flin Flon yard limits

A quick update on progress on the Hudson Bay Railway.  After the big push to get SOMETHING done before the layout tour progress has slowed somewhat, mostly because all the things I pushed off so that I could focus on laying track and roadbed had to be done.

salvage track work and turnouts?

Have any of you tried to reuse flextrack and turnouts that have been ballasted? This is higher end track and turnouts (plastic ties)  that has been nailed to homasote and then ballasted the usual way. Is there a way of removal that works good? Is it worth the effort?  Or is it best to toss the old trackwork in the dumpster and start new?  HO scale. Thanks.

Budget Rail Bender

This is my low cost Rail Bender, built for about $20.

Rail Bender made from a Jaxa wrench

point to point or not

I wish to build a model train layout depicting the lifecycle of cement production I want to start the lifecycle by building a quarry with a stone crusher and washer facility ( the glacier gravel co) leading to a cement production plant (valley stone cement co) not a ready mix plant connecting the two using a conveyer system and then finally at a later stage would like to add a ready mix plant( medusa cement co ) connecting all three facilities closer to a city or town Should I use a point to point layout system or could I use another layout format

Quiet Summer -- Dreaming of Working on the Railroad

It has been a long and busy summer, but not for working on the railroad. The trackwork is reasonably stable now, having suffered a few more changes. Sitting with potation in hand mentally operating the railroad has been fruitful. Track in the mine area was extended and a cross-over added that enabled switching runarounds that would otherwise have proved difficult. An interchange track was added between the Tamworth extension (an area built on top of the helix) and the main. And the Deseronto yard got a small restructuring as well.

Richlawn RR V2 - Adding "invisible" feeders to the track

Now that most of the track work is completed on the railroad I started adding feeders.  I've seen a number of methods of soldering the feeders with most of them soldering to the side of the rails.  I thought about trying to solder the feeders to the bottom of the rails before installing the track but it would have been too difficult.  I decided to solder the feeders to the bottom of the rails after installation and it isn't that difficult.  Here's what it looks like using this method (sorry about the fuzzy pictures - this was a rush photo shoot):

Modular Operations/Tearing it all apart

After the setup in Chehalis, I decided to tear apart my Columbia Coldstor module and completely rebuild it from scratch.  If you are interested in seeing the problems and why I wanted to start over, you can watch my YouTube video.

My first inglenook

My first inglenook and first time using Peco code 83 seen here on this thread.

Problems with a Walthers #8 curved turnout - was the loco

*****UPDATE****** The problem was the loco - not the turnout.

A have a Walthers #8 left hand curved turnout that is giving me fits. Every time I run my loco (Proto 2000 U30 4 axle) through the turnout it derails at the exact same spot when the turnout is thrown for the left route. It does not derail when the turnout is in the other position. I've rolled a number of cars through the turnout and they don't derail. Any ideas how to solve this or do I need to pull it out and replace it with a non-curved turnout?
