Benchwork - Roadbed

Making Roadbed

I had just started working on my new layout, the last time I had built a layout was about fifteen years ago.  This time, like most of use I had a little less to work with to build it.  I have gotten myself back into scratch building as much as possible.  So when it came to my roadbed I started researching what I wanted to use, foam or cork?  Foam seemed too soft and springy, but it looked more affordable then cork.  My first step was where do I find cork sheets.  Researching on the web I had found out I need to look for a roll of cork underlayment for flooring.

Layout Update: End of Sep 2015

Just a quick update to progress that has been made over the last couple of weeks. The first thing that I had to do was to order another box of Peco code 80 track.  While waiting for the track delivery, I double checked the electrical plan (shown in the video) so I would know where to place all of the Atlas insulated joiners (I know they are ugly but they work great).

Gold Spike Trains on the LaMesa Model Railroad Club

The LaMesa Model Railroad Club in San Diego opened the entire mainline from Bakersfield to Mojave on Aug 29, 2015 after 25 years of working towards this goal. This is about 1,000 feet of new track. The event was celebrated by a Gold Spike ceremony at Tehachapi Summit with a meet between Gold Spike Specials from the AT&SF and the SP. The Santa Fe steamer is 3892 and is the oldest engine on the roster at 50 years of age. It was the first engine owned by one of the club founders and designer of the railroad, Tony Anderson.

Recycling 20+ year old train table

When I was in high school I built a train table using the design in the "HO Railroad that grows" by Linn Westcott. When I expanded the layout i built a second table. Seven or eight years later I dismantled the layout, and threw most of the scenery and track away, but the train tables became storage tables.

Progress on the C&E extension

With 2015 nearing its 4th quarter, I think it's time to take a brake and step back to get an overview of the expansion project I scheduled for 2015.

While starting operation on my layout mid 2014 I found that I had too few industries along the road and drew a plan to get at least some more coal industries in.

It's here

My benchwork guy just called, he is bringing over the first of my new modules!  Some questions I will answer up front - he is an MRH advertiser, I have seen his work, and he lives 10 miles from me (free delivery!) This module is very complicated on the top surface, so complicated that it was worth it to farm it out.

The module will be the subject of a future article, so you can start holding your breath now.

My first Scenery Attempts

Here are some more photos of the scenery for my club layout. This is all in an 18" by 6" scene with backdrops by backdrop junction. This is still the example module I showed awhile ago but more views.

Let's see if this is the one...

Hi all.

I am going to start a layout. I think that is going to be the "one".

I asked for your help to plan a small freight yard, to serve just as staging yard. Well, I was over thinking about it. I opened SCARM and made a buck of trackplans, and all of the looked awful. Then, after reading Mike Confalone Allagash Story Vol1. I decided that should take an approach just like Mike does.
